So i was looking at a boat and brought my trusty hammer with me to check for stringer condition. I gave them a few raps and they seemed pretty good but then wacked the transom and it sounded dead. I have always had outboard engine boats in the past so i know they are constructed of a solid transom such as wood or whatever the new boats use but do inboard boats have to have a solid transom? When I tapped the transom it just sound like there was fiberglass and not even a sound of rotten wood. Like i said this would be my first inboard boat so I have no clue how they are built.

Good for you!......Your boat dosen't have a cored transom. That is what the pocket is for. What most would call a transom is actually where the propshaft exits the boat. Check that area out, along with the strut and rudder.

My lady ownes one. She loves it! We have been thru the Penn Yan with a "fine tooth comb" and have found her to be exceptionally built. This coming from an ex-boatbuilder of sportfishing yachts.

Pictures please...trenchfisher.
