Looking at purchasing a 1984 29' with twin
350's. Like the boat alot but could use some
feedback from other owners of the good and the
bad of tunnel drives in rough seas. Also
any general info would be helpful.

Re: Penn Yann Boats

Since nobody else has replied...
I don't own one however I do know that Penn Yann are fine vessels. The tunnel drives decrease the shaft angle therefor increasing the prop efficiency. They also reduce the overall draft of the boat. The tunnels themselves add another 4 'hard' chines to the boat making it a little slower steering. I'm sure this is compensated with a larger rudder or something. I'd conclude that if the tunnel drive were a far superior design to a regular configuration that they'd all be built like that but it does have some small advantages.

Basicly, what Magster said... I have a 21' Tigercraft single inboard which has a tunnel very similar to Penn Yann's... No complaints

Re: Penn Yann Boats

I have the same boat the snapperbait has, a 21' TigerCraft center console with a v8 and the tunnel drive, and I love it. After many years of headaches, heartaches, and cashflow issues with outboards and I/Os I will take an inboard. The tunneldrive comes up out of the water quick. If I have any complaint, and that is truely too strong of a word, it is that the bow rides higher than I like when planed out, unlike with an ob or I/O which you can trim and lay down if you want. I am not 100% but I beleive that is a function of the prop being under the boat and in a tunnel. Some of the guys more experienced with running inboard tunnels may be able to speak more intelligently about that. Even with that, I really like the boat
