Penta 125B Has Power But No Ignition - New Starter Already Installed

Working to get a, formerly, very dependable '85 Bayliner running. It has a Penta AQ125B in it. The boat was always well taken care of.

Just went to fire it up and it will not start. Two years ago it was running well, winterized, and put away. Now, when key is turned and boat is in Aux mode, electrical lights up and related electrical items work (horn, gauges, lights....)

But once one turns ignition to start engine there is silence. The person who put it away two years ago told me they thought the starter was bad. So I have replaced the starter. I have successfully jumped the starter to turn/crank the motor. But I cannot start it with the ignition system.

I am suspicious of these two parts. The button on the circuit breaker will not push down. Shouldn't it? And the other part, I don't even know what it is, has some plastic housing that is out of form, as if it may have burned???

1) How difficult will it be to replace these parts?
2) What is the second part called?
3) Am I on the right track?
4) Any other ideas?

Thanks in Advance.
Eric

Welcome aboard!

With a volt/ohm meter you can check the circuit breaker in Ohms mode to see it it has continuity through it. I think it pops out when tripped, then pushes back in.

The second item is a relay, pretty standard item at a parts store. They are generic enough that one would not necessarily know exactly what it is for just from a pic.

Good luck!

The relay is close to the starter and has yellow with red stripe wires as said before pretty generic. Once you get it to start from the ignition switch there is an additional thing that helps the engine start quicker. From the small male spade on the starter solenoid that is not used add a wire from it to the +side of the coil which adds a "by pass" circuit to power the ignition up when in cranking mode. Bayliner did not use the Volvo wire harness from the engine to instrument panel and used a cheap one to save $.

Maclin and Kenny, thanks for the input.

Though the red button on the breaker is out, it seems to have continuity and low resistance. As for the relay, I found this youtube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ire7vyDqelg), that helped me test is. Everything looks good there, too.

Last night I bypassed the throttle assembly, in order to check if it was the safety neutral switch that was causing me troubles, and engine still wouldn't crank. I am going to now repair wires where I created a bypass and just start chasing wires from front to back to find the weak link. So far, I am completely stumped :(.

Thanks again,
Eric

It is now cranking. After 15, 16 hours of tinkering with electrical system, it all boiled down to a loose wire at the ignition switch.

Thanks again for the help!
