There are two sets of bearings and a shaft in there. I pull the engine.

It has been said that you can change it by removing the upper gear housing but if the clamp ring and seal are stuck you will have to remove the engine to finish the process. There is a bearing on the main shft that is held on by two snap ring and a cover plate. So be prepared to abort the mission or pull the engine.I am looking at the same senario.I have been advised by a mechanic and this form to change the vibration damper on the fly wheel and all the bushing and seals. See volvo penta 270 outdrive vibration for similar post. good luck

The 270 is an old unit, changing the gimbal bearing can open a can of worms depending on its service history.

Best to pull the motor and while your elbow deep in the job you may as well check everything in the area, including the vibration damper.

Aldo

One way or another you will have to move the motor forward to get the bell housing off. For that the motor will have to be unbolted from the stringers, transom plate and supported by a motor hoist of some kind. So it will be just as easy to pull it all the way out and work on it from there. If you need parts (bearings/seals for the bell housing) and cant find them anywhere try Cobe Marine http://www.cobemarine.com/ that's where I found mine. While in there you should also change the vibration damper ($75.00). Also if I were you I would pull the whole drive instead of just the top half. If you just pull the top half you will need new gaskets to put the two pieces back together. That and we have old drives that do not like to come apart and go back together to easy. Save yourself the hassle and pull the drive and when done put it back on. Nothing else needed except the time to do it.
