penta 275 outdrive dipstick and shaft busted through the cover?

i took the upper gearcase apart and found a brass washer/spacer thing broke.it goes between the coupler and the upper housing i believe,if i replace that piece,and the cover put all back together will it last?is that piece a normal thing to break?the shaft got pushed up through the cover.it also has a duoprop on the bottom end and its a 5.0 liter penta motor on a 18'capri bayliner.The duoprop is not original.Can the props be too much torque and the 275 trans just not strong enough?i have no idea what would break the brass thing.

Lots of High rpm shifting (above 1000) usually causes that. Usually preceded by clunking in gear due to excess movement in the vertical shaft of the upper gear box due to excess gap in top nut clearance. Caused by high rpm shifting. Vicious circle.
