Hey everyone, I have a houseboat with a Volvo Penta 3.0 mated to a SP stern drive. The only thing I can see on the outer part of the drive is SP CD Trim. Everything else is covered in green.
We have had this boat for a little over a month, moved it a few miles to the current marina when it was bought and since then it hasn't been out. Well we decided to take it out this weekend and play a little. Got 1/4ish mile away from the marina and stopped to maneuver around for a minute so Dad could get used to steering the boat around. Backed up a little, went forward again for a few minutes, then backed up to turn around, wouldn't go back into forward gear. It would go back in to reverse but the lever wouldn't push forward. Finally, something locked up and shut the engine off. Went back to N, started the engine and pushed forward, engine stopped dead. At that point, it seems as if the drive stuck in gear and wouldn't let the motor turn over. When I say that, I mean the starter would engage and the motor would turn over about 1/4 inch and lock up.
Upon inspecting the drive (which I have no experience with, I'll admit) the cover that is supposed to be over the shift linkage is gone. When shifting to forward gear (very hard to push lever) the linkages move in the way described in another thread I found, so cable seems fine. Trying to manually turn the propeller results in one way being fairly hard to turn but will break free and give a grinding type sound as it turns and locks back into place, the other direction is solid, will not turn.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? This boat is about 100miles from where I live so it may be a day or two before I can get back to it but I'm willing to try about anything. I like to learn.
My other problem is, how likely is it that this is something that can be fixed without pulling the boat out of the water? (65ft houseboat, a little more difficult than backing a truck up to the ramp and pulling her out)
This is an older boat, 1989 IIRC
Thanks for any help!
