Penta Outdrive Cleaning/Gasket Replacement

Hey guys,

I've been attempting to do the most a novice can on cleaning up some old outdrives(Volvo penta SP-A and a 285) that were sitting for a long time. I've drained the oil, ordered an upper gasket replacement kits, as well as new bellows and such.

My question is: It looks like the previous owner painted the ourdrive with some nasty latex paint. Some of it looks like it's leaked a bit into the upper gearcase. What solventor cleaner would you use to clean the upper gearcase before I replace all the gaskets and such?

Ayuh,... A Gasket Scrapper, or Putty Knife...

Thanks again. I'll try the putty knife for the paint, it looks like alot of salt buildup around the upper garcase and such. I'm worried about just scraping all that while the upper gearcase is open.

I know this sounds like a totally dumb question, but is there any solvent or cleaner thats safe to use around and possibly in the gearcase to get the thing throughly clean?

Ayuh,... Use a Rag, stuff it into the opening...

I can't think of any solvent that cuts corrosion....

SSteel brush on a grinder,..??
