I usually use guicksilver 2-stroke Ob oil in my 98' Merc 25hp and mix it to 50:1....or if money is tight, I will use the good ole' Supertech oil at wally world...and can never really tell a huge difference in the two. Yesterday I went fishing and forgot that I needed gas so I swung into the gas station to fill up the boat. The only oil that had on hand was Penzoil Outdoors 2-stroke oil. says TWC lll certified (I think that the correct letters) as well as TWC l and ll. Says prevents piston scuffing, ring sticking, burns cleaner and smokeless. So I filled up and mixed it 50:1 and went fishing. After running I have to say I am not impressed. First off it smells like burned wood when it's running (smells like ashes), seems like the motor did'nt run as well as it used to. I put Brand new plugs in it yesterday before the trip, and today I took them out and they were dry...not with the light oil film they usually have. Did a compression test and it's fine at 130psi even on both cylinders. Am I just overly concerned? Or should I dump the gas oil mix and start over? Anyone else use this oil before?

You just proved to yourself that Pennzoil is "better" than the other oils because it burns off as it should. There is nothing that says two stroke plugs should have an oil film on them. Unless you have some actual numbers to compare you also cannot say the engine performed worse with Pennzoil. For all you know it was the gasoline you filled up with.

I've used the Pennzoil Synthetic for years and it works fine, very little smoke, carbon, plug fouling. I used to use Yamaha Outboard Oil and never really had any problems with that either. Most of this oil stuff is probably in people's heads anyway!

Re: Penzoil....not a big fan

Which is why I posted this. I've owned the motor long enough, and run it enough to know how different oils perform in it. Im used to how one type/brand smells, and runs and this one was WAY different. Motor just seems to run a little harder, like not as slick...if that makes since. But then again it hit it seems to hit the max rpm a little faster.....so I guess it was slicker. Either way I still have almost a full tank, and im not trashing the liquid gold gas we pay for these days so it's going to run til it's gone. The plugs scared me because there was only a light hint of oil on the electrode it's self...but overall the plugs looked like a plugs out of a car. No smoke at all, just the burned wood smell of the oil burning. If thats what "good oil" is intended to do, then I guess it's working. At least my compression was right on par so I know running 4 miles @ 5,800 RPMs with the oil did'nt hurt it.

Re: Penzoil....not a big fan

I guess we can assume you actually got it at 50:1, no mistake? Nevertheless, I have used virtually nothing but Penzoil Full Synthetic for the past several years. If nothing else, full syn is slicker than dino oil, so you should have less friction. It definatly does smoke less, but I haven't paid any attention to the odor. Hey, nothing wrong with a good campfire smell anyway.

Back to the question. You asked if you should use it up. Well, I would. But if you have doubts, you have a decision to make. If you don't trust it for whatever reason, don't do it again. But please don't spread any unfounded rumors about its unworthiness. We have enough of them already.

I think I will keep running this tank out. Now question is........I had about 2 gallons in the tank mixed with regular old quicksilver, had no idea the Penziol was full synthetic and filled it the rest of the way up with the gas/penziol mix. Is it going to hurt anything mixed with the Quicksilver? It is mixed as good as your going to mix 50:1 with premix methods. Not bashing the oil....misunderstood the oil....yes. Don't know about you guys, but i'm not made of money....that tank is going to run til it's time for another refill.

Re: Penzoil....not a big fan

Pennzoil sells full synthetic and plain dino oil. Either way, it shouldn't hurt to mix it with the quicksilver. I use pennzoil, walmart supertech, etc., etc..... Can't tell any difference in any of 'em, unless they're synthetic. If synthetic, I get less smoke and less cushioning on my right butt cheek. No difference in performance that I can tell. If the motor is staying nice and cool and the carbs are clean, I think you're fine to run whatever TCW-III oil in it that you want to.
Go fishing!

Re: Penzoil....not a big fan

Penzoil makes several different two stroke outboard oils, a total old school dino oil, a blend, and straight synthetic, so read the label and find out which one it is.

As far running differently, I have raced 2 strokes for many decades and while there are big differences in how oils smell plus the color and amount of smoke, I have rarely seen a difference in seat of the pants results. Don't get me wrong, some people totally believe there is a huge difference, but even on a dyno the results are barely noticeable on a stock engine.

I suspect that the Wal Mart Super tech is the exact same oil in a different container, same with Texaco and Shell.

I think SuperTech is maybe the same as Shell or Texaco, not Penziol though. Penziol seems to be way different. Even smells different. And it don't smoke like the others

Re: Penzoil....not a big fan

ive been boating for over 30yrs,in all those years ive used just about every 2cycle oil on the market always tcw3 offcrose!..can i honestly say that the top of the line yamalube or quicksilver is better than wallmarts supertech.NOOOO...at least for older premix motors, for the passed 10yrs ive been using nothing but SUPERTECH. never had any problems, even running at 45mph to bimini & back..in my honest opinion & experince, aslong as it says TCW3 ur gonna be ok,ive used tons of those gas station-tcw3 oils, penzoil, valvoline, quakerstate etc all TCW3 & they all worked perfectly..if its for premix, buying expensive oils is basicalt giving ur $$$$ away...
