Performance chips

Anyone have an experience with these performance chips that just plug into the OBD port? I saw one the other day that claims an extra 5 mpg. Apparently it’s not a permanent tune and only works when plugged in then everything goes back to factory when removed. Just wondering if they really work and if there are any drawbacks?

I was asking about my truck 😂
That would have been a good thing to mention this being a boating forum and all

Talking gas motor and not diesel

Folks have been selling quick fixes and increase mpg since I was a kid in the 60's. First thing to note is a motor will burn so much fuel per HP. Less fuel equals less HP. If fuel burn is leaned out, you get detonation and destroys the motor

It's BS. Only way to alter parameters within a gas engine's tune (for performance, mileage or otherwise) requires actually altering said parameters with a tuner/laptop and being stationary. Diesels are the only ones that seem to have on-the-fly capability and are usually for performance. Save your money.

Sorry for the confusion. I thought I put this in the non boating technical section. Fat thumbs are always in the way.

'Other/Dockside chat', which isn't necessarily non-boat lol. As I tell people on other forums I admin, a few specifics always help. For example, you still haven't said what year/make/model of truck...

It’s a 22 Tocoma TRD off-road.
I think you have already answered my question though. I was suspicious anyway. It also claims an extra 60hp which I’m not interested in but if it is true I’m guessing it’s for a split second at a very specific time in the power band. This time of the year I rarely get to drive faster than 40 anyway most of the time is sitting to stop start traffic. I will save my money.

I have one on my vehicle.
Most newer vehicles have it.
Came from the factory.
Push the button and the shift points are changed, along with fuel injectors are restricted.

It does get me better mileage, but really isn’t nice for driving.

Gas pedal needs to be pushed down 80% or more, to get it to downshift, if you need to go.
