Hey fellers,

Some of yall know I just put a powerhead on my evinrude looper. About done breaking her in, when guess what, a good friend of mine has a boating accident and gives me his boat motor and trailer. My engine is a '95 E-rude 130 and the one he gave me is a 2003 Yamaha 150hp carbed 2 stroke, and I just cant keep my eyes off of her!!! Starts right up, runs great, and very well taken care of. Cosmetically it is in excellent shape, and it is WAAAAYYYY quieter than my engine is.

My boat is a 20' Semi-Deep V hull. The boat weighs 2300lbs. dry, so it is not a light boat. All foam looks good and dry from what I can tell. I put trim tabs on the boat because it has a HUGE gas tank (64 gallons) and I keep a large bait tank back there (45 gallons) and the tabs help her plane out easier. She hops right up on plane and has a lot of power out of the hole. Top speed with a light load is 39mph, which is plenty for me. The one thing that I don't necessarily like, is that the most comfortable cruising RPMs are at 4200. Not terrible, but the engine definitely gets a little throaty at those RPMs. Itll plane at less throttle, just doesnt "feel" like that sweet spot.

This boat has 150hp on the tag. I have her loaded up good with 4 batteries, big fuel tank, big bait tank, coolers etc. Feels pretty good with a heavy load, and feels excellent with a light load. Some of these boats came with a 115. Man I do not think this boat would feel good with a 115 on it............

Anyways, I may fog the Yamaha engine, drain the carbs and store the engine for a rainy day. But I have also been considering swapping the Yamaha with the Evinrude. Honestly, if I ever get another boat it will likely be new or at least have a new engine on it. As much as I like working on outboards, Id rather not have to work on mine, just others :)

So what do you guys think? What would you do in this case? Would the added torque of the extra 2 cylinders be worth the swap? People rave about their Yam's. My Erude now has 8 hours on her. But, the engine kinda pisses me off though, because even with all that work it wont operate quickstart properly, and I have had Clarke at CDI troubleshoot my whole ignition system, and have replaced everything. So needless to say, she starts but takes a little bit of effort.

I will assume the Yammy is a larger displacement engine. That will give it more total Torque and therefore better acceleration. even thought each cylinder puts out less torque. The extra 2 cylinders will also make for a smoother engine, especially at idle. It should also get better fuel economy being basically two 3 cylinder engines from an exhaust tuning standpoint. It is easier to tune the exhaust of a 3 cylinder over a wider Rpm range than that of a 2 or 4 cylinder. As for top speed, the 150 should be about 4 or 5 mph faster.

Cool man. Yea my 3 cylinders have always treated me well. This 4 is cackly I guess it is the nature of the beast. The v4 is a 2.0L and the b6 is a 2.6 I believe. Do you think it's worth swapping?

I would swap it in a heartbeat.

Cool man, thanks. I just need to get some controls for the Yam if I do that. I have side mount and the darn boat has flush mount controls and in dash key switch. $$$$
