pertronix question

I have a 1986 gm 5.7L omc engine. I ordered a pertronix ignitor kit #1181 for it and it's not the right one, I read somewhere that 1181 is the one for all gm v8's. But apparently not. This one was for a distributor with the advancing weights at the very top of the shaft, mine are at the bottom of the dist., then the plate with the points, then the lobes, then the rotor on top of the shaft. I have no idea what brand distributor it is. It's a screw-down type cap and the only numbers I could find were inside the cap that said IBM-1008. Could anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks

Re: pertronix question

Send it back for the right one. Do not get roped into doing a brand new butcher job! 1 new part and it drops in perfectly. No can do? Get your money back. Pertronix was known to have Q C problems a while ago.

Re: pertronix question

Could that number be IBM-7008? If so, that is a Prestolite distributor ... same one used in my 5.8L OMC engine. The desctiption of your distributor sounds the same as mine except I've got a clamp-down cap. I just ordered the Pertronix II for my distributor.

Pertronix part number for all Autolite/Prestolite 8 cyl. IBM series distributors is:

Cap Pertronix Pertronix II
Screw 1582 91582
Clamp 1581 91581

Consider spending the extra money for Pertronix II

Hope that helps!

Re: pertronix question

Hmm yeah that could be IBM-7008...I didn't look at it extremely closely. Thanks a bunch for the replies, I wish I could've checked on this before I ordered the part...I got it new from a guy off ebay so who knows what'll happen.
