I took my puppy to the vet yesterday (SAT) for his distemper shot and two others that I cannot pronounce. They said to come back in 3 weeks for his second round of distemper and his rabies shot. Then they stated that he is done for the year and to come back next March for his annual vaccinations.<br /><br />I told them that I would like to have him on a 2 or 3 year schedule unless it was the law. They said Ohio has the worst laws regarding pets and that I would be doing a strong mistake by skipping his shots every year or two. So I replied "So it is not the law that says to have them vaccinated yearly. They informed me that it is required to have their shots when they are puppies, but then only have the rabies shot every year.<br /><br />Here is my delima. FOX News did a report on the dangers of yearly vaccinations. They had shown that dogs that received yearly shots sometimes getting sick and sometimes dying because of the shots. A person that I know had two Huskies that were super great dogs. Shortly after their vaccinations, both had to be put down.<br /><br />I am trying to find out what is required in other states that have better laws and researh on dogs. I'll be glad to pay the money to keep my pup healty, but I sure don't want to pay to have him sick or crippled.<br /><br />Your knowledge and experience in this area is strongly appreaciated.....Thanks.....SS

SS, here in Ky. you are required to have a rabies shot every year and to have that years tag attached to the dogs collar.<br /><br />As far as other shots go, I give mine, their own shots, parvo, 7way etc.<br /><br />I also give them their yearly rabies shot myself.<br /><br />I order all my shots.<br /><br />Do not get shots from your local pet supply for they sometimes are not stored properly and can lose their effectiveness.<br /><br />Be also careful when taken puppys to the vets.<br /><br />You do not know what is wrong with other dogs there and don't let them fool you, your pup can catch stuff from other dogs, especially parvo.<br /><br />Always ask when you get there if there is any dogs/pups there being treated for parvo.<br /><br />This is some bad stuff and I lost a whole litter of Rotties once because of it.<br /><br />That is one reason I give my own shots now.<br /><br />Just my .02 worth.

Thanks SBN,<br /><br />You just opened up a new idea for doing it myself. In the past I always condsidered a dog was a dog, if it got sick, you put it down and get another. I'm getting older and get too attached, so my heart just can't handle the lose to well anymore. Getting weak as time goes by.<br /><br />Another area brought to my attention was Heart worm. I know it is carried my pesky skeeters, but I never had a dog die from it or get it that I know of.<br /><br />Since this pup is in the giant breed catagory, their life span is not as long as smaller dogs. I just want to keep him healthy as long as I can without jeapordizing his health by unecessary medications.

Rabies shot every year? Mayfloat I would check this out for sure. The rabies shot my dog gets is good for 5 years. She has had only one round of the so called required shots and that was when she was a pup. Since then it has only been rabies shots for her because rabies seems to be the only real threat to her health. She is 12 now and none the worse for wear,hell she can still give the stray cats a run for thier money. My neighbors dog is super pampered and is always getting shots for this and that and the little fellow always seems to be sick. Just MHO.<br /><br />---------------<br />Flathead

Since my dog is going to be inside about 80% of the time, I feel rabies is no threat, but however some vets thinks it is necessary. I think it is necessary for the Vets to scare you so they can keep operating their business by giving unecessary vaccinations.<br /><br />Since he will be spending alot of time on the boat this season, I probably opt for the heartworm treatment.

The count down is at two weeks (+/-) until puppy time for my German Wirehaired Pointer and I'll be giving all shots but rabies. It's not difficult. Saves time, money and as SBN said keeps them out of the vets office where they can pick-up a few bugs or get mistreated. As far as state regulations go I'll look into it a bit closer to make sure I'm thinking correctly.

Requirements for Dogs and Cats<br />Effective date: June 7, 1996 Last update: Feb. 9, 2001<br /><br />No permits are required for any dog or domestic cat entering Wisconsin.<br /><br />Dogs and domestic cats must be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection that shows the status of the last rabies vaccination, including the date of rabies vaccination and the date the animal is due for re-vaccination. Rabies vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian. Yes spinner, here in Pa. I believe it is as long as the shot is up to date this may be why they give the shots that are good for several years. Rabies has been on the rise in this area the last couple of years. With the strays and the racoons and possums and stuff I feel that a rabies shot is needed. Mayfloat you may want to rethink the rabies shot even if your hound is inside 80% of the time. It only takes one scrape with an infected animal and its bye bye rover.

Just did some reading on rabies/vaccinations. It depends on the brand/type of vaccine for its duration. They say there is lack of research for the study of long term meds. This is probably due to the animal activists. I'm going to check with the local dog warden to see what he knows. He eats breakfast at one of the MickyDeez I service. So far "Keeper" seems to be one smart pup, he is pretty much housebroken already. I'm jealous, he is getting better treatment than I am from the wife.

In Alabama, the only shot required by law is rabies and that's annually. My vet gives a lot of shots too and I'm not sure they are all absolutely necessary. I'm not willing to take chances with my dog, so I go along with whatever he says.

GET THE RABIES shots!!<br /><br />It only takes one bite from another dog or wild critter your Fido has chased down. Rabies are not fun. Also pretty hard to license without the paperwork. And don't even think about what would happen if your dog had rabies and bit some little kid. Child gets treatments and dog gets quarantined or put down for testing. You get to pay for it all. Your homeowners insurance won't if you didn't get the shot.<br /><br />Do I speak from experience? YES.<br />Bit as a kid, the State Patrol located the puppy 5 states away (PA) cause family went on vacation 4 hours after it bit me. Puppy was professionally transported in quarrantine $$$$$. <br /><br />If you are worried about the vet's office, have him come out to your car in the parking lot, or get a vet that makes housecalls, they all do in farm country.

Well, like I said, I give all my shots myself.<br />That way I don't have to worry about the shots being old(to long on shelf), and don't have to worry about them vet bills.<br /><br />I get all my supplys from Drs.
