If I copy all my pic files off my hard drive, remove them, will I lose all my pix on photobucket? Will a link be broken? Or, once they're on photobucket are they good unless I remove them from their site?

When you put your pics on photobucket, you uploaded copies. So you can delete all your pics off your HD and they will still be on Photobucket.

I used to put my pictures on a CD for backup, now I just put LOTS of stuff on the little USB Flash Drives.

Good call, because I've heard those CDs have a threoretical limited shelf-life, because the plastic coating is not 100% impermeable.
Moisture can/will eventually work its way in and oxidize the shiny metal encoded part. although, I have music CDs that are over 20 years old and they seem ok so far, so who knows...

Those flash drives on the other hand, will probably last forever. Durable too- one fell off my keychain in my work parking lot and got run over. Didn't look too good but still worked fine.

Re: Photobucket/Pic files

Thanks gents, that was the answer I was hoping for. The only photos I keep on photobucket is the ones I post in forums. Just want to back up the photos on my hd so I can remove them. Another bad thing I found out about cds is, they only have so much space. Duh. BUT, with a cd it wont create multiple cds to store all my pix. I would be only able to store so many pix then I would need to grab another cd and start the process over to store the rest of the pix. It doesn't do a 1,2,3 ... of 5. They all would be 1 of 1. Time for a flash drive. I see why cds are starting to go in the direction floppys did.......

Looking at Amazons link, a digital flash drive would be the way to go????????? My daughter uses a flash drive for school. She uses it to transfer data from our computer to the schools and visa versa.

Flash drives are typically used to "shuttle" data from one computer to another, like your daughter uses her flash drive. But they've gotten so cheap that like Don I used them for long-term storage when I was changing jobs and I needed to copy a bunch of stuff off my work computer. Flash drives are very reliable- since they don't have moving parts they don't tend to fail with age and usage, as traditional hard drives eventually will. You could also go with an external drive for backing stuff up-- 2 TB drives are ridiculously cheap now. I picked one up for $90. Get one that's 2 1 TB disks set up for RAID, so each disk is a copy of the other. That only gives you q TB of actual storage, but peace of mind knowing you always have a backup.

Re: Photobucket/Pic files

I have found flash drives great for data transfer, but I am skeptical of using them for pure back-up since I have had so many of them go bad. I constantly am carrying one or two in my pocket and another 2 or 3 in my computer case and one or two in my camera case ... so I use them all the time, but I don't trust them to be the sole holding of any specific data, and I would be worried if they were my sole back-up also. As a secondary or tertiary back-up they are great, but what they are made for and where they really shine is data transfer.

And as long as Photobucket doesn't fold or you loose your password, or something else goes bad, you will have them.

^^THIS!!

I lost a bunch of pics when geocities folded. I was nowhere near a computer for several months before/after that happened. finally got home and checked my massive amounts of email and poof...geocities closed and my pics be GONE.

ever since, I just burn all important pics/files to cd-rw's that I keep in two safe locations in duplicate in case either place were to catch on fire, etc.
