I have a couple of questions regarding pickup point timing and adjusting a new throttle control cable on crossflows. I have a 1986 Evinrude 90hp.
After setting the cam follower pickup adjustment (using a shaft amplifier) to the pickup point (follower aligned with cam mark just as the carbs start to open), I had to adjust the idle screw temporarily so as to hold it at this position while I checked the pickup point timing. Otherwise engine vibration kept moving it while I adjusted the timing to 4 degrees BTDC per manual using the thumb wheel.
Now here is my question- before reattaching the throttle cable (a new one so I can't just go by how it was), should I match the cable to where the cam is at this pickup point (4 degrees BTDC and cam follower aligned with cam mark), or should I set the idle screw to some other initial setting first- perhaps something less than the pickup point?
In other words, after warm up and in neutral, when throttle control lever at control box is latched - should the cam be somewhere before the pickup point (where carb shafts are still closed) and there is still room to advance spark before they start opening, or at the pickup point ( where carb shafts have will just begin to open, timing is at 4 degrees BTDC and cam follower is aligned with cam mark), or after the pickup point, where carbs have already opened?
