I have a 1991 Volvo Penta with a 305 Chevy. I had it hooked up to muffs today while working on it. While keeping a eye on the gauges I noticed that the heat guage started rising more than it should. Then I look back and see just a tiny bit of smoke coming out of the impeller housing. I shut it down right away. The heat gauge never made it anywhere near red. I look under the swim deck and it turns out the muffs slid right off. The muffs probably came off as soon as the engine started running. My guess is it ran 3 minutes or so without water. I havent bothered checking the impeller but I know it is surely burned up. Any chance that anything else may have been damaged? The impeller is smoked and no signs of water coming out the back. Should I even bother trying to drain the engine again?

Sure i'd drain the engine if your winterizing it. You need a new water pump kit, and possibly a new housing, you need to take it apart and look at it (pully mount type??)
You also need to check the collector rubber and shutters if you have them. As well as the exhaust bellow.

I would check the rubber hoses between the risers and the y-pipe. I took some off my engine a couple year ago that looked okay from the outside but had come apart inside and I believe they could cut down on the water flow out of the risers.

Take some pics of your melted impeller for us to see.

I have not pulled the impeller yet just cause I have my hands full with so many other projects. Was gonna let it sit over the winter before replacing it. With that said they are easy enough to pull out. I will try to get some pics up soon. I can not say for sure that it is burned up but lets just say that the small amount of smoke coming out isnt a good sign.

If it ran dry it's burned up for sure. Its takes just a few seconds to melt one.

You need to take the raw water pump cover off and let that all drain anyway as part of the winterizing. Just pop the impeller out using two screwdrivers and see if any pieces are missing.

I would say it is more chewed up than melted but here it is. I think I am gonna list it on Craigs list as nice impeller just needs minor work:D

Looks like a fine quality piece there.

Seems it needed to be replaced anyway. Looks old as heck but that could be b/c it was on fire. :D

I think you have some fishing to do to find all those pieces that came off.
