Re: picts of upholstery i just finished

Nice work there Jimmy and welcome to iboats. Redoing the upholstery is one of my favorite things after I found out it wasn't as hard as I'd thought it would be. Well, I suppose if you looked at my first or second cushion I did you might have thought different, but by numbers 10 or 11, heck man I was almost a pro, lol.

What kind of sewing machine are you using? I found an older 60's vintage Singer from a local "Sewing Machine Repair Shop" (which I didn't know existed until I needed a machine) for $35.00 and it has by far, been the best money I've spent in my adult life. Now, how about some pictures of that boat you've got all this time and energy invested in?

Re: picts of upholstery i just finished

thanks. i sew on a consew 206rb1 and have another off brand set up for thick thread for design work. the boat is gone it was a customers. it just takes practice. learning to control the treadle on a commercial machine is the hard part. i have a shop so i have alot of nice toys for this work. foam saw, i recommend you either use a turkey knife or buy one. a band saw for foam is great. we use a 3 inch grinder 36 grit to shape foam. and i have a steamer, hoffman high pressure.
i posted in another thread that ill help if i can.

Nice to have a pro onboard in an area that we all would love to tackle ourselves. It would be nice to get some detailed tutorials form time to time (Basics,do's and don'ts)

thanks. the first thing you need is a good machine. then practice sewing on it. learning to control the beast first. i recommend starting small. start looking at how stuff is done. the only way to learn is to see how someone put it together. im not uptight like some guys, you ask me ill tell you how its done if i know. people helped me. sewing is like anything...everyone does it different. take your time and buy good stuff to work with. use cheap materials for practice.....learn how to pattern stuff. ill try and answer questions if i can jim

All I can say is wow!!!! I am wanting to do mine if I ever get the glass done. But I want it to look good, so I may have a pro do it. I got to find a machine and play around with it. It can't be as hard as putting a new transome, stringers, and a floor in a boat. I didn't know how to do that until I tried. Of course a good apholstery job would help hide my transome, stringer, and floor.

WOW !!!! Nice work for sure. My biggest question is how did you get all the wrinkles out? Or are you just that good.
Do you have any pointers on using heat ? How much heat can vinyl handle or is it best to stay away from heat. My biggest concern about using heat is does it take away from the durability of the vinyl. I am impressed and was just looking for pointers or tricks in the trade.

Really nice work, I happen to be in cold springs about 20 miles north of Sparks and have plans for both my old crestliner and my new to me boat this winter. I may just give you a holler when it comes time to do the cushions.
