piercing beep noise!

I recently purchased a 94 tracker with a 60 hp oil injected mercury. At random a piercing beep noise comes on, sometimes it quits on its own, other times i have to turn ignition off! I understand from readin another post that it could possibly be a stuck float in the oil tank, the only difference was that it was mentioned to happen at start up and it was a beep, beep, beep... instead of being constant! Any insight would be greatly apprciated!

you might get more response if you post in the REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE section, under Mercury and Mariner Outboards.

Re: percing beep noise!

i think there's a 2 stage thing going on there-

the intermittent beeping at 'key on' means you're getting low.

the continuous tone during operation means 'put more oil in, idiot'

if your float has stuck/become compromised, it could be at the 'put more oil in idiot' position.

usually this is a variation of the resistor theme, where X amount of resistance gets you one, and X (usually close to zero ) resistance gets you the other.

sombeody with a manual could likely tell you better, but you could always ohm the leads coming out of the oil tank, and see if the value changes as you manually run the float thru it's range of motion....

blah balh blah.....

oh and also you could have a short. time to get a manual i'd think!!

Please read and understand the post before refering to anyone as an idiot! I was comparing my problem to another post That was comparable but not exactly the same situation.

Thanks for showing your intellect!

Re: piercing beep noise!

60 hp has a very simple alarm system

Oil level sensor in the oil tank causes a rapid beeping

Temp sensor causes a continuous beeeeep

If you are hearing a continuous tone then first thing is to check the temp, can you hold your hand on the cylinder block and count to three?

If not, then it is time to drop the lower unit and spend some quality time with your water pump.

On occasion the alarm module does go bad. Check everything else before you replace it.

Charlie,
Thanks for the advice, no the motor is not hot at all! and there is a steady strong forceful stream of water coming from the motor, could a problem still exist in the pump although its pushin good water through? I think the prvious owner had changed a year ago.

From personal experience with a 1995 mariner 60.

Beep beep beep is low oil sensor. Disconnect blue wires from sensor module. It will clear if sensor is problem.

Beeeeeeep is high temp alarm or bad module. You can bypass module by disconnecting tan wire to temp sensor from module and connecting direct to harness. If alarm stops then sensor is good and module needs to be replaced.

...sigh......

of course i was not calling you an idiot.

i apologize if that is how it was taken. you know the term 'idiot light'??

on to the issue-

usually there's a temp switch in the head- when it gets to a certain point it grounds itself and you get the tone.

i have had a 78 evinrude get hot in one cylinder bank- the water pump was working fine, but shells and stuff were caught in the water jacket, getting that cylinder (the one with the temp sensor coincidentally) hot.

i had to pull the head, and clean all the shells and sand out...

Re: piercing beep noise!

Hi Racer8676,
I have a 2002 60 HP Mercury 4stroke EFI
THe manual says six beeps at start up maybe an engine function.
Three beeps every four minutes is an Engine Fault
Both conditions say see dealer.
Solid beep is for several things
- a cooling problem do not let the engine over heat.
- low oil
- engine overspeed
- Voltage is too low
- cooler sensor failure
The latter two will cause the engine guardian to restrict power.

I have also learned that if the power supply is low from the battery you will be single constant repeating beeps as the power drops. Connection of a battery pack will eliminate the beep and isolate the problem as a power problem.
Good Luck
