pin drive prop.. is it still ok ?

I have 1973 18hp Evinrude motor. It has a 3 blade pin drive prop.

I was boating in heavy chop the other day so I was staying close to shore limping the boat back to dock. When I hit a sandbar. the motor got us back after hitting the sand bar but the ride was so choppy i couldn't tell if it was slipping at all.

the next day I pulled the prop off to inspect the line I scribed on the hub when i first got the motor. The mark is now about a 1/4 turn away now.

The prop and hub seem very solid still. The pin drive style hub does not allow me to see any twisted rubber as it's all internal on this style of prop.

Could this prop be spun or do you think it's still ok?

I am not familiar with pin drive props and dont know how the hub works on them. any help would be appreciated.

thanks
Mike

If you hit something its normal for the old line to be broken.
Usually if you have a spun hub it is spun and when you reach a certain power it will let go and slip increasing rpm as the boat slows and you have to slow to get it to stop. As use progresses it will get worse. On rare occasions a hub will let go yet still work for awhile untill something disturbs it again.
You can mark the hub again and keep an eye on it.
In my opinion if you have a spun hub you will know it.It is not a subtle thing.
You may want to check your blades for damage or distortion.

Ok thanks. I have not had time to drop it in the lake again. but I figure I will mark the Hub again and keep an eye on it. If it the line moves again then I know its time for a hub repair or a new prop.
as for distortion i dont think it has any a i hit soft sand but i will pop it off and inspect and spin it to see what i can find.

I wanted to drop the boat in A nearby River today that has a fast current but with the potential for a spun prop i guess I'll play it safe and try it in a lake first just in case to be safe.

Thanks for the in put Steelespike.
