I am in the process of replacing the stator on my 2000 70hp Johnson. I am waiting for it to get here. In the meantime, I looked at the installation pdf. The CDI instructions have me pulling the black/yellow wire from the current plug and installing it into the new plug. They reference a tool that runs ~$70. There has got to be another way, but I am having trouble finding answers. Can anyone give me some input and help save me some $$?

Look into the male plug at the base of the pins. There can be a small "tang" that can be pressed in (with a small screwdriver) to allow the pin to be pulled out the back of the connector.

Remember to document the position of the wires, to make the installation of the new plug easier.

The head of a finishing nail works well for pushing the pin out (indentation in the head helps to center). A small needle nose pliers is also useful.

I had a set of those back in "The Day". They more or less just pushed the stuff in and out, using alcohol as a lubricant. Just a foggy memory for me now.

Are we talking about the set of 3 tools used on those pins in the rubber plugs up to 1995 ?--- Or the new style plugs that came out and used on the 2000 model 70 HP ?
