Pinion Bearing Removal

This is kind of a continuation from a previous post about the 2.3 locked up. I was able to pull the pinion bearing assembly out of the upper drive casing. Will the gear and bearings have to be pressed out and new bearings pressed on. It is a 1989 2.3 Cobra outdrive. jas,<br />It's time to at least look at a manual.Maybe your library has one,or your dealer might let you peek at his.You may then understand why the press and proper adaptors are needed to get the assemblies apart.<br />And to put it togeather will require shimming tools you won't want to buy for a one time job. Even the cost of shims can get pricey.<br /><br />DHP

jas,<br /><br />Good idea.At my shop can rebuid most drives.At home I can do a regular Mercruiser.At home I cannot rebuild an OMC.The tools are needed.<br /><br />DHP

or you can just fashion your own tools, as I did. I've rebuilt my own omc without buying a single tool, but I've had to make like 4 tools. Usually just grinding here and there on some jaw pullers or making extensions or something. And yes, the drive works great and I did't damage anything, it's all possible if you're poor like me with enough determination and ingenuity. (Oh I also did it without any type of welding)

Taking it apart is only part of the problem, reshimming and reassembling so the drive will last is the problem. The big problem jc69 is having now, is he has no manual, and no clue as to how it actually comes apart, let alone going back together.

if you follow the problem to its start jas did a simple oil change but did not realize that the drive required 64oz of oil and only put 32oz back in <br /><br />if he had a manual or read one at the libary he would still be out on his boat not here trying to fix his drive<br /><br />everyone advised that if he was going to go DIY it would be best to get a manual so he could do things in the correct way <br /><br />i am not really sure how this is bad advise <br /><br />tommays

I bought a manual off of Ebay this weekend. I would still rather someone do the bearing installation for me so that I know it is done correctly. I don't want to go half way with this and it spoil my spring AND summer.

jas,<br /><br />Just out of curiosity I just called TC Electronics. They're there, said the prices listed on the page I linked above include return shipping but you're responsible for shipping it to them ($26 to $66 UPS depending on your location, you need to call UPS to find out exact amount). She said they'd have quick turnaround right now, as spring gets closer turnaround gets longer as people start to get their boats ready for launch. <br /><br />I'm not pushing these guys, never used them, and still suggest you do an iboats search on 'em before you ship them you your upper. But if you don't have a qualified OMC shop you trust in your area, might be worth checking them out. Maybe give them a call and talk to a mechanic about your particular problem and see what he thinks. Any manual should have those specs, like the rolling torque that needs to be acheived by shimming and such. The one I rebuilt is an '85 mechanical shift though. Don't know too much about the elec. shifts.

jas<br />I have chatted with TC Electronics several times getting hard to find OMC parts and they are very helpful and good folks. I have even picked up some used parts like Dorsal and Tilt cover plate. Wayne is very knowledgeable on old OMC's and has been a big help before I found this group "S"

Thank you. I talked to Wayne and he said there is really nothing to it. He said to just use the shim that came off of the bearing carrier and taht I should be able to press the gear out of the carrier. I did this this evening and have one last question for now. The lower bearing did come off. The upper is being a little more stubborn. Most of it fell apart as this was my original problem. I will crwate a new thread to address the race issue. Thanks again guys
