The pinstripe is 23 years old... comes off but the adhesive seems like its burned itself to to the gelcoat... goo gone, paint thinner is not doing it... used a heat gun for the top layer too... whats next? how do i get this off? Should i try compounding it off? I do need to do a full detail on the boat.

No other way, absolutely 3m wheel. Any decent auto parts store that has a paint department will have one. Just go slow and don't heat it up too much, you can burn some really hard-to-remove stains into gelcoat. If you see a hint of smoke, STOP.

3M also has woodgrain and sripe remover along with the woodgrain and stripe adhesive remover. comes with a little plastic scrapper. the first one turns the pinstrip or woodgrain decal into a raised bunch of goo, the second turns the adhesive into an oatmeal like consistency.
