I read all the threads i could find on the piston stop tool and i understand how to make one with a spakplug tapped with a bolt through it. What i dont understand is how far the bolt needs to extend into the cylinder for the piston to be at TDC. Do i just screw it in and when i feel the piston hit it slowly unscrew it while turning the flywheel until it dont touch anymore? Any help would be great thanks!! its for a 98 90hp rude

Take out all your spark plugs. Put the eraser end of a pencil in the plug hole, turn the engine by hand till you feel the piston top out and start to go back. Mark the flywheel at the timing pointer. When you make your piston stop, gently thread the inner bolt in till it touches the piston. I would suggest some sort of plastic or rubber cap or covering on the bolt contacting the piston.
