For those of you that know me very well, you know that I am a HUGE Louisville Cardinal basketball fan. Boy did we get some bad news today. Coach Pitino is going to take an indefinite leave of absence due to a severe pain in his left side. All he would say is that prostate cancer has been ruled out. He said it was urilogical(sp) related. He is scheduled to undergo testing at some clinic in Cleveland Ohio. He said the local doctors could not positively identify why he is having this pain.

For those that aren't keeping track, Louisville is having a great season. They have beaten two #1 ranked teams this year, and are ranked #4 in both polls. They are 15-1, having lost their first game by one point in overtime. They have been on a roll.

All that doesn't matter though. I really hope that its nothing serious. Pitino is not only a great coach, but he is a great man to the local community. The amount of work this man does for charity is unbelievable, and he has sure had his share of tough times here recently.

Heres hoping, (and praying), that Rick will be ok, and be back on the sidelines soon.

Re: Pitino's Health

Us Louisville fans thank you for your outpouring of support. :p

Since everyone seemed so concerned, I will tell you that he is going to be alright, it is non-life-threatening, and it is not cancer. He said the doctors will fix his problem, and he will be back for Louisville's game against Marquette on Saturday. He will miss tonites game against Houston though. He did not want to discuss further the results of his testing.

I guess Mellow and myself are the only College Basketball fans here.

All other sports pale in comparison!!!!!

You guys have to understand where i'm from, .....other than your Father, the most respected man in your life is the Coach of your favorite college basketbal team, at least thats the way it is around here.

You all stick to your Baseball,(boring).....or Football, (no fun without the Titans), .....or Hockey, (played on ice, which means no boating),.... or Bowling, (only fun after a 6-pack),....or NASCAR, (which is really not a sport 'cause there are no balls...........well, I guess to drive around at 200mph does take some........well, you know). But personally, i'll stick to my College Basketball, thank you very much. :p :D

I really get into college hoops in about another month. Not a big Louisville fan (not since Ralph Sampson), and hope that Pitino would fall under a bus. Don't really have a favorite team, anybody that beats Duke and Kentucky I guess. Sorry Carpy ;)

Just heard on the radio that he may return after the weekend. He coached the celtics into the ground--should have stayed at Kentucky.

Re: Pitino's Health

Guageguy, Ralph Sampson  He played for Virginia.

I'm with ya though on whoever beats Duke and Kentucky. Being a Louisville fan, we like anyone that can beat them Wildcats.

Trust me, I despised Pitino when he was with Kentucky, and didn't care for him when he was at Boston, but it wasn't until he came to Louisville that I really listened to what he had to say. Like him or not, the man really knows his college hoops, and Louisville is winning more now then it has in 15 to 20 years.

He is a college coach, what worked at Kentucky wouldn't work in the NBA, and he proved that. You can't motivate a player in the NBA by putting him at the end of the bench, he will still make his millions whether he plays or not. But his motivational techniques definetly work in college.

Tylerin, I have a feeling that the rematch with Cincy, at Cincy, will be a different game. Cincy won't get spanked on their court as they did in Freedom Hall.

I knew that Carpy, major brain cramp. How about the McCray brothers? Didn't they play under Crum in the early 80's? "Doctors of Dunk" or something like that?

Re: Pitino's Health

Yeah, Rodney and Scooter McCray played in the early eighties under Denny. (Won thier first NCAA championship in 1980).

.......and your right, they were called "The Doctors of Dunk", with Darrell Griffith aka, "Doctor Dunkenstein"(sp) leading the way.

I remember going to open gym in 1980, and watching Griffith grab quarters off the top of the backboard, no kidding. I have a picture of him dunking the B-ball and he's looking down into the basket. He supposedly had a 48" vertical leap, and he was 6'5". I have never seen, in person, anyone jump like that (still to this day), and I go to about 5 Louisville games a year.

Since you don't really have a favorite team Guageguy, you might as well start cheering for them Cardinals............right? ;) We have a natural hatred of Kentucky, and thats a start. :D

Are they a top 25 team right now? I'll tell you what, when I fill out my brackets, I'll give Louisville special consideration ;)

Re: Pitino's Health

As of today they are ranked #4 in both polls. Their record is 15-1. They have beat every ranked team they have played. They look as good as any of the other three teams ranked above them.

.......of course, I am a little biased. ;)

Re: Pitino's Health

Man Carpy, I had a couple of bad days of connections and just logged on and saw this thread. I was going to add how great a man Pitino is and give my condolences, but then you had to go and badmouth Kentucky. So forget it! Hope the Cardinals loose every game the rest of the season! ;) :p

Re: Pitino's Health

'speck, you will get no slack from me about Kentucky..........ever! I deal with them Cat fans daily, and get tired of hearing about their team, (which is the second best in the state) :p

Anyway, the Cards won again last night, so I guess you need to "hope" a little harder! ;)

If I didn't badmouth Kentucky, then I wouldn't be a true Cardinal fan, and likewise for you.

I'll tell you what I tell all the other UK fans....... Its never a bad thing to lose to a superior team like Louisville. Its a good loss for you guys, and sadly for them Cats, something they better get used to.

Just remember Carpy, "Every blind squirrel finds an acorn sometime." Or maybe that is blind Cardinals find a seed ...

Re: Pitino's Health

Now who do you think feels worse, you guys or me?
I was at the Louisville game, and they didn't even show up. That was pathetic. I believe that their heads started to swell, and they thought they could just show up and win.

Don't forget that Louisville's best two players are nursing injuries also. Taquan Dean has a pulled groin, and Francisco Garcia has a severely twisted ankle. Give the two best players from any team those injuries, and see how the team performs.

The Cardinals will be healthy again shortly, and I am sure Pitino will use this loss as motivation.

I am not worried in the least. 16-2 ain't a bad start fellas.
