Pitot tubing installation inquire

I am getting ready to install a speedo in my MFG Carefree 14. How this insturment operates is pretty simple. Now my questions. The installation instructions say to mount the pickup assembley 6 inches to the starboard of the centerline of the boat. If i install the pickup in this location, it sure is going to make a bunch of twists and turns to get it up to the back of the insturment. I would like to hide the tubing under the starboard gunnel. This supplied tubing will not lend itself to a tight radious without kinking. Is their a problem with mounting the pickup close the the starboard side of the boat? This would make a much more direct routing (less turns) to the backside of the insturment. Are there some sort of 90 degree fittings to make this install look cleaner? Where you have to drill a hole thru the transom,, what angle should this hole be drilled at? The thought of drilling a hole thru your boat, well, what can i say.. Please Advise. Mitch

Re: Pitot tubing installation inquire

It can really go anywhere on the back, the deal is they want it in clean water since it won't work it isn't in constant contact so I think you can go farther out on the transom if you have to.

As far as fittings I wouldn't do that, the more places you give it to leak the more places it will leak, best to keep the hose as a single piece.

Drill your thru hole well above the water line and seal it with some 3m 5200 and you should be fine, as far as the routing you will have to figure that out although I woud probably do that part first since it determines where you drill through the transom.

Ayuh,... Go to an auto parts house, 'n grab a roll of Vacuum tubing of the right diameter...
It's flexable rubber, 'n will go around corners, Nicely....

X2^ It will go up and over the transom too. Avoiding the drill.

Thanks guys for your responces. Bondo that is a great idea about the vacume tubing. The supplied tubing is semihard plastic and for sure will not make a nice 90 degree turn with a small radius. Mitch
