How can you tell if your bearings are pitted? Does anyone have any pictures of some pitted bearings that have gone bad or are about to go bad?

Thanks for any help

Re: Pitted bearings

Sometimes the pits are visible and other times not. If you trailer to saltwater you may not see any pits but corrosion may still be present.

Nevertheless, if you have even suspect or question the serviceability, just replace them. New bearings are an inexpensive item. Break down along the road you just once and it will cost you at least 10 times the price of a set of bearings.

You don't need photos! Rollers and races should be mirror smooth. Anything less is not acceptable. Slight blue or brown discoloration is acceptable and normal, but ANY pitting, spalling, rust marks, or other imperfections will lead to failure--some sooner than others, so replacement is the best option in that case.

Re: Pitted bearings

Amen to that.
Story: I was in a hurry to pull out, but upon inspection saw a good sized crack in the side of one of the trailer tires. Emotional side of brain said, "You are only going 15 miles--the tire will last. And even if it does go flat, you have the spare." Then the logical side said, " Just change the damn thing here in the driveway and use it as the spare." I listened and changed it there where I had the floor jack and no traffic.

Moral? No moral. The tire PROBABLY would have lasted, BUT, I got to the ramp with no trouble and enjoyed my couple of hours on the water. AND, I wasn't dirtied from changing a tire on the road. Ran out the next day and bought another tire for a spare.
