Planing plank or sponsons

Hi all
I've just noted my old wellcraft nova spyder is for sale.
The boat is an Alan Jones Marine Copy made in Australia.
This was a great boat other than the fact it wanted to flop over when on the plane especially with a side wind
And sometimes when decelerating, very scary!!!
I think this was due to to the severely deep vee that this hull has.
I'm interested in buying it back and tackling a way to sort out this hull as other than this issue it was a cracker.
It's fitted with an evinrude 225 and could crack 40knots
My question is should I look at increasing the planing plank or look at installing some floatation sponsons like I did on my little glass craft with great results
All advice appreciated
Gus

Re: Planing plank or sponsons

Interesting, I wonder if you have any pix of the hull from bow to transom?

Does it 'tip' to the same side in every scenario?

Hard to believe that something hasn't changed that's causing this. I'd hope the boat maker didn't build it w/ a 'flaw' that requires modification to the hull.

Modifications to improve or suit how & where you boat maybe, as it was a production boat it had to fit a wide range of use & users. But not to make a boat useable. And as you describe the problem, I'm not sure I'd want to be aboard if at any moment it might change it's attitude relative to the plane of the water. No thanks...

Ayuh,.... If ya don't like the ride of a Deep-V hull, why not buy a boat with a shallow V, vs; reinventin' a hull ya don't like the ride of,..??

Btw,... Just because a deep-V heels over further than You like, it don't mean there was ever a chance of it over-turnin',...

Carp, I wasn't even thinking the OP was referring to a deep V's tendency to CARVE turns, keeling over slightly... If so, agreed ^^^

Re: Planing plank or sponsons

Ok guys I think I may not have explained myself clearly
The hull is a deep vee design as such it carves deeply and steeply on corners that is a given.
The issue is that it tends to flop to port when planing in a straight line this happens randomly but usually when decelerating.
Other than this problem the boat is a beauty.
When I owned it i experimented with ballast, fitted a stingray Cav plate extender and tried raising he engine all to no avail.
I sold the boat after an episode where it heeled over and broke a friends ankle when it was crushed between an esky.
As I said its back on the market for a very good price so it may be worth revisiting it and fixing the problem.
My initial thoughts were that the hull was designed for an inboard and this one was fitted with an outboard with different cg and weight distribution.
The interesting thing is the hull has no planing plank at all where other 23s seem to have a small one.
The other idea is that the outboard has all its weight up high unlike an inboard where the weight is all down low.
The easiest option would be to install sponsons but this will no doubt slow the boat down and make the ride somewhat harsher
I hope this explains the issue better .
