I am switching from the old wood- fiberglass console to the new thinner plastic console. The plastic is a lot thinner so I wondered if I need to use wood backing behind the plastic when I install the steering assembly in the plastic one? If for no other reason so the fasteners will fit about the same?

Without seeing it, tough to tell, but I can't see where it would hurt anything if you didn't need it. Looking at that same project this spring as part of a major refit/repower on a 'toon we've had quite a while. Maybe post a pic of your project if you get a chance?

I backed the area where the steering mechanism mounts with 3/8" plywood and the assembly bolts fit about like they did on the old wood fiberglass. Looks pretty solid if nothing else.
