I took my Mercruiser 888 out to replace the engine coupler and mounts and found that there was play in the driveshaft where it enters in the transom plate, should i replace the gimbal bearing?

Insert alignment into bearing and coupler (all the way). If up and down or side slop at bearing, that's a good indicator or bearing wear. You should also be able to feel bearing slop with fingers inside bearing. If bad, it will most likely be rough turning. If you replace bearing, be sure to replace seal on the back side of bearing (if there is one on gimbal housing? I have never NOT seen one but I only have worked with V8s.).
