My engine is a 1990 Johnson 50hp o/b.

Here is my original thread for reference:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2122854#post2122854

I've had it to the shop....just got it out Friday. Took it out today...same problem, but my wallet is $200 lighter.

Comments from mechanic:

Carbs look good
Set up idle mixture screws and throttle plate
not coming up to temp
found loose seat and old seat still in motor
removed old seat and installed other seat properly
shifting and cooling ok
idle and throttle advance ok
motor starts and runs well

also made a note that my temp alarm isn't working. he said that the temp alarm is separate from the vro oil alarm. I thought the temp alarm didn't work becasue the oil side of my vro was disconnected and I thought the alarms were all connected.

So I'm stumped.

I dropped the boat off at the shop on my way home and I'll call them in the morning.

So it ran perfect at idle and slow speed. Give it some gas....up to about 1/4 throttle...no problem. Starts to sputter when you try to go faster than 1/4 throttle (approx).

Any ideas?

too bad you didn't take the troubleshooting tools out with you, a timing light would show if you are dropping spark to a cyl or 2 under load.

$200 was very cheap, if he starts throwing parts at it you will be shelling out up $1000 and no diagnosis.

If he says he "thinks" its (fill in the blank) part , then he hasn't really diagnosed the problem.

the heat sensor is a seperate circuit, the alarms use the same wire at the buzzer but they are isolated by diodes in the harness from each other.
Its well worth tracking down the problem to have that feature.

And you can do all this work yourself.
Get the service manual yet?

Re: help troubleshooting please...

I talked to the shop yesterday. They said that they suspect something very simple......like bad orings in my tank something. He said that sometimes they can shift around causing the engine not to get enough fuel. Even though I was squeezing the bulb, and the bulb felt firm, it maybe just wasn't letting enough gas through.

They said that this is a tricky one to diagnose sometimes because it's very intermittent.

They also said that it's very, very rare for a motor to run well in the test tank and not on the open water. They have a proper tank and test props to simulate load. they test with shop gas too to eliminate a gas problem.

I'm not sure they tested with my tank at all. He said they always check that if they suspect a fuel problem.

Wouldn't that be standard procedure? I'll be really ticked off if I've spect almost $300 and it turns out that my major problem was a bad tank.

Re: help troubleshooting please...

So I replaced my tank and gas line fromt he tank to the motor. It worked.....it was funny though.....started to sputter......I took the hood off the motor and turned hard right so I watch the throttle linkages as I gave it some throttle...then it worked!!! Just a weird coincidence though. I guess it had some crud in it or something that had to work it's way out. But my motor seems to be perfect now. Except for my tilt issue that I posted about in a different thread..... :(

you might have an exhaust leak if it sputters with the hood on but runs clean when hood is removed. Keep that in mind.
