I am helping a friend of mine sort out a 1990 9.9 HP Johnson and up until today everything was going great...until a pull on the rip cord ended with the rope not going back in. I assume the spring broke or maybe a spring retainer failed...any thoughts? We don't have a manual but I guess YouTube may be the next thing for us to look at. If it is a broken recoil spring does anybody have a trick to replace it easier than a manual would suggest? Thanks in advance....Happy Boating!

Its not nearly as hard as many make it out to be. I cant explain well but if you end up doing a bunch of winding springs under tension and stuff you are doing something wrong.

If you have a IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) it should show how everything is assembled. You first need to disassembly it to figure out what, if anything, is broken. Then proceed to replace those parts and reassemble. Winding up those recoil starter springs is a learning lesson that is easier to do then describe. JMHO!

I had a recoil spring break on a chainsaw, and disassembled and rebuilt the end to make everything fit again.... rewinding it learmed me a few new words
