Exactly what does equal opportunity employer mean?

My wife is having issues at work with being crapped on after 5 years of service. For the last 3 years they have accomodated her school schedule for RN. They have also help fund her schooling as well. She now only has 4 classes to complete before going onto her clinicals. Her boss's supervisor has told the boss that they cannot afford to lose my wife that she is a very strong asset to the job. That doesn't matter to my wifes boss. She is standing by her decession not to accomodate, but she is accomodating others. She won't let my wife trade with other employees work dates, but she lets others.

However, her boss won't budge on working around the schedule. My wife wants to tranfer to another department, but her boss won't let her because of her being an excellent worker.

I'm thinking that she is going to have to quit to find another job. Jobs here in Ohio have been declining and never increasing.

She is strong willed and is compasionate about becoming a Nurse. Her present job will not stand in the way if worse comes to worse.

Sounds to me things aren't equal anymore.....

Re: Please explain this:

That is hard to understand especially since they worked with schedule times and funding knowing she was going to school to become a nurse. I would have her sit down with all parties involved and try to talk it out first. Good luck, from what I hear nurses are in demand, they have my respect.

My future wife has been going through the same thing ever since she got of lpn school, shes going for her rn,i think its just in the nursing feild, theres alot of favoritizme and kiss butts, but it seems to me the nurses that do there job well and show up always gets the shaft,As far as jobs there is always going to be a demand for rn,tell her hang in there and good luck with her clinicals shes almost there.

That has to do with accepting applications, nothing to do with current employees.

If a man treated your wife in the same fashion he'd have the pants sued off him.

That's Equal Opportunity!

Re: Please explain this:

Easy answer to this one. Your wife's boss is afraid that your wife will receive her degree and leave the present job to pursue nursing. The boss thinks (probably without realizing it) that by making it difficult for your wife to complete her education that she (your wife) will be available in her present job longer. This is a difficult situation but I'm sure your wife will do what's best for both of you.
I'm no Physiologist, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Expresss last Night.
Bill...

Re: Please explain this:

SS
When your wife completes her studies/education and becomes an RN will it take her out or the field she is currently employed it, or will it advance her in her current field. If the first part is true, you can see the employer is looking out for his best interest, at your wife’s expense. If she is working on moving up in her current field and her boss is holding her back for his own benefit, then he is being an a$$. Most people looking for career advancement will look outside their current employment if they feel there is no opportunity there. See like Eddie Money says “Ya can’t keep a good man down”
As far as equal opportunity that has more to do with non discriminatory hiring than company policy on work scheduling.

Think it's time to go above the bosses head,as in fact the company has an investment in your wife.
The higher up's would not tollerate such an unkindness for fear of problems, the labour laws may not tollerate also.Trying to drag a person down is just not right, company's always try to improve their employee's.If the higher up's dragged the boss aside, you just might see a big attude change.Good Luck hope it works out for the best. Oh we need nurses in Canada

Re: Please explain this:

First to be discriminated against she must be in a protected class, which she is a female. Then there is the question of is this action being done because she is a female. Nothing so far shows that to be the case. The EEOC does apply to employees not just hirings but for some reason over the past 5-6 years it has lost its teeth. This appears wrong, unethical and down right mean but nothing illegal. When we vote we must be careful what we ask for, we might get it. This is a time of strong government support of business, not employees and consumers.

Re: Please explain this:

Let her quit so she can finish her schooling and get her RN. There are many places where there is a shortage of RN's. In central PA they are paying bonuses to nurses who can recruit another nurse to the hospital! So if she is a hard worker AND has the RN, she will be a very desireable employee.

I think the boss is trying to protect her job, maybe she is intimidated by your wife's abilites and thinks she will take her job in the near future.

I agree with others, she needs to talk to a higher up and lay out the problem, but ONLY AFTER she documents several discussions with her boss about the request... so she can prove it isn't a catfight and she attempted to follow the chain of command.

Aspeck is dead on in the business climate of our country, but that does not mean it is right. Our country is presently so far toward business that employees have no rights.

Re: Please explain this:

The company that I was hired on worked with my school schedule. We worked that out when I went for the interview. I asked the interviewer that if the company would worked with my college schedule and they say YES. It is was you initially put up front and let the menagement know before they hire you so that they know what to expect of you. There are no shortage of nursing job around this part of Texas.

Some hospitals will hire her now, in a support staff role, knowing that she is going to be an rn in the near future. They want to get first dibs on her when she is done with school.

Time to seek out one of these hospitals.

Inequities are a fact of life for working people. I have seen it every where I have ever worked. I am not a union person at all but have found out through the years that if you have no union to back you up when it comes to personnel problems in the work place you are pretty much sunk. They can claim just about anything to dismiss you or treat you unfairly. Unless you are willing to take on a lawyer,(If you can find one to take your case)Your at the mercy of the powers that be. Been there,, done that.

Amen, Flahthead, in Texas we are a right to work state, sounds good for employees, it is not. We are also the only state that does not require Workers Compensation so do not get hurt on the job either, you will be sunk.

Re: Please explain this:

Thanks for the replies gents. About everything that has been said we have hashed out here at home.

I talked to her at noon. She went up to the hospitals Human Resources. They said what was going on wasn't right. The said if she was going to school for anything other than a nurse or doctor that they could understand. HR also said that if they would intervien it could make the working relationship go bitter and sour. HR called different parts of the hospital. They are going to try to get her transferred, but it is up to her boss to approve it. This is the part I don't understand. If there is conflict, why behave in such a way.

She will finish school. I met her 9 years ago, broke and taking care of her daughter. Since then she got her high school diploma at the age of 44 and now she is going after her ultimate goal. At least her goal is not getting rid of me! :D Supporting my wife is the greatest treasure this man can ever do.

Thanks again an I'll keep ya posted on any updates.

Hows the RN situation in TN? The eastern section is the area we are eventually going to move to.

Whew! That's a relief! There for a minute I thought you might be getting ready to tell us about her physical condition.

If she is at the LPN stage, she should have no trouble getting a job . The wanted list at the Glasgow hosp is longer then my arm. Small hosp. My middle daughter is working toward RN, now working as LPN, has choice of jobs in Florida.
