Please fill me in on the "Choke Solenoid" ??

I have a 1982 Mercury 25 5943279 25HP. Came on a boat I just bought.

On a bracket that is bolted to the face of the carb is a solenoid that is labeled in the manual as a "choke solenoid". You turn the choke knob on the front of the motor clockwise and when it is full clockwise, the linkage engages this solenoid. What happens when the solenoid is engaged?

My reason for wanting this info is that the bracket that holds the solenoid on is broken and the solenoid is now only attached to the broken off piece of the bracket and is no longer engaging the linkage. The bracket is NLA (so is the solenoid) and I will have to go to some extremes to even try to do a repair that would get the bracket back together and hopefully get the solenoid back in service. It appears the motor has been functioning a while with this bracket broken and the solenoid just laying there not in use.

I thank you for any info/advice on this.

Generally a choke solenoid is powered by 12 volts. Sounds like yours is all mechanical linkages? If so not sure why it would be labeled solenoid. In a 12v system,a choke solenoid engages a plunger to the carbs which allows fuel directly to the crankcase for ease of starting.Does your carb have a butterfly valve on the front?

Don't see a butterfly on the front of it. I see a butterfly on the inside of the carb toward the back that has several small holes in it. When I manually turn the choke knob on the front of the motor the butterfly does not move. This is an electric start motor also with a manual pull handle on it. I have not used the electric start function yet. Just got the boat and did not have a battery hooked up. Wanted to test the motor to see if it would fire, which it did. I would think that the choke solenoid engages when it sees voltage from the key ignition. Maybe there is a push in key choke or a lever choke on it. Have to see.

Either way, is the choke solenoid an integral part of the carb system that MUST be functional??

This is a combination electric/manual choke. What happens is the solenoid plunger when activated either manually or electrically presses down on a pin valve on top of carb allowing crankcase vaccum to draw fuel thus acting as a choke/enrichener. If pin is not being pressed in it will not choke, and you are correct as solenoid is NLA.

Typically the motor will use the electric choke solenoid via the remote controls (push to choke key switch) but also the motor will likely have a manual method in case of solenoid failure. This may be the linkage you see.
