May not help but be sure you put the wire on "TOP" of the insulator on the points. I have seen it done where someone put the connection to he points under the insulator on a motor cycle. I switch i aroun and it started righ up

Make sure your not on the ground side of the insulator but on the hot side where the nut is

how to set the points correctly on 7.5 mercury

Hi guys could someone be so kind as to tell me how to set the points on a 7.5 mercury (1976) this is before i use this engine as my anchor lol being a builder and enjoy playing with engines but this thing has beat me I think also withch set of points for which cylinder ?? I got this cheap the guy before me has rewired it useing diffrent coulerd wires and I have rewired the points, I have two green wires from the coils to the stater and one green from the condenser to the same and a red wire from the kill switch to the other then wiers from the ponits to the negatives on coils if all that makes sense??
Any help would be appreciated

if you did hook the points up visa versa the cylinders would fire on the wrong stroke and you would not be able to start it. The cam lifts and closes the points at the percise time the engine needs fire. Try switching the around. Set the flywheel at 0 Topdead center. Find which set of contact points is closed. That wire on those points would go to Number 1 cylinder coil.
