took my boat out for the first time,(after the impeller scare)it started great the boat ran like a dream went about 7 miles out in the estuary went to start the boat to come back to port and it would not start,checked the plugs they were really oiled up, cleaned them, the engine started but only if i held the throttle (at the engine) about half way, it would not idle or run below about 1500/2000 rpm we had to come in on the aux engine no fun and about a 3rd as fast also the engine has never needed choke to start, sorry again for the story and any help will be appreciated. thanks

Check the compression and spark...it sounds like you dropped a cyl, Maybe the head gasket blew.<br /><br />TMD

sounds like a float is sticking in the carb or the fuel pump dipharm collapsed. Pump the fuel bulb untill it is firm and then hold steady pressure on it. Look to see if gas is dripping out of the carbs. If it is you got a problem in that carb. Other wise if the bulb never gets hard you have a fuel line leak or a pump bad.

hi again guys,you were right tmd the head gasket had blown, bottem cylinder full of mayonaise, do i just change the gasket or will i need to get the head skimmed,etc i think it all stemmed from the impeller episode

Look inside the cylinders and see if there any evidence of a scoring on the cylinder walls. Make sure to tuen the flywheel so you can look all the way to the bottom of each cylinder. If no scoring and you cannot see any physical damage to any parts other than the head gasket I would lay the head on a known flat surface and make sure it is not warped. If it is not warped I would replace the head gasket and possibly the ones to the exhaust covers and put it back together and check the compression again. (If you are going to replace the exhaust covers pull them and inspect the cylinders the the exhaust ports before replacing the head gasket though. No need to waste parts)
