Sounds like the pumps shot.
Rritt on this site rebuilds them.Or you can buy a new one.
I'd send them both to RRitt. It's way cheaper than buying a new one.

No, falls with no pressure at all on it, just drops

go to sears and buy an armstrong adjustable spanner wrench of professional quality. cheap spanners made from stamped steel will flex and ruin your tilt cap. take off tilt cap and inspect bypass valve in piston. if not the then next guess would be a blown oring on the trim piston. it is fairly common with atf, but 1988 is a motor oil year. Unless somebody put in wrong fliuid then a blown trim piston is unlikely.

Wrong fluid may b a problem, I've used regular tilt n trim fluid and 30w non detergent in it. So you think the piston is the problem and not pump?

got the tilt cylinder took apart, what do i need to replace, just the orings? nothing looks damaged. when i made the earlier post it was not hooked to motor, could it have been slow due to system not being totally full? I filled the resivoir without it hooked to motor, and i know your suppose to fill with motor down. any other ideas for me to try tomorrow?

when people use the word "drop" the problem is usually one of the three bypass valves built into the tilt piston. It is not fixable because the spring and ball are stamped into place.

when people use the word "drift" it is usually the valve body. The symptoms are the same for both piston failure and valve body but the speed of falling is different. Slower with valve body.

the piston rings hardly ever fail except when people use the wrong fluid. For most engines the reason to rebuild the rams is because the top seals are going bad. When the top seals start going bad then water can get into system and cause bigger damages.

Thanks, so if oring on piston is bad what symptoms would that cause?would that cause the tilt and trim to move up slow?

Re: please help asap, tilt and trim, motor wont raise

ok so ive narrowed it down to the pump as far as it not tilting up. switched up the up and down lines at pump and tilt cylinder worked when pressing down button but would not tilt down using the up button, so that tells me its the up on the pump not working, trim cylinder also moves slow. I know the two up outlets on pump are the first two, so i would assume they are on the same check valve. Took snap ring out on the end, but cant figure out how to get the check valve out. Ive searched on here and found to blow it out with motor,is there another way to get it out. Also I need to get two briggs carb rebuilt kits to fix check valve right? I also made the mistake of taking off top plate on pump....got it back together properly im pretty sure, are there any o rings or seals in it? I put 3 small and 1 big bearing back, 2 springs, 4 gold washers, and 2gears. Did not see and o rings or seals in it. Trying to get this thing fixed before saturday. one other thing on tilt cylinder, if its off of unit how hard should it be to push up and down?
