Re: please help I.D. my wooden boat

I am terrible at identifying boats. Are the ribs rounded over (like half-round shaped) or square? It makes me think Giesler. I'll see what I can find.

EDIT: Now leaning back to peterborough...

Very nice boat. It's looks similar to mine, but definetly not the same manufacturer. I wish I could help you more. You don't see that many small wooden runabouts here on Iboats but yours is very nice. There are several wooden boat groups on yahoo.groups that may be of help. There is one that is strictly outboards. I'll look up the info and post it. Here is a pic of my Sportcraft.

Re: please help I.D. my wooden boat

Looks a lot like a Peterboro. Your bottom line doesn't list a location - are you in Canada? Most Peterboros stayed in Canada, although I am sure quite a few made it south of the border. It's obviously strip-built, probably cedar. Certainly has Peterboro lines. Thompson had pretty much gone lapstrake by the 1950s, so I don't think it came out of Cortland. The ribs look too narrow to be a PennYan.

There are several Peterboro afficianados in the ACBS Toronto chapter (www.acbs.org). Might want to look them up...

Are the decks planked or plywood sheet? For some reason, the deck doesn't look original, from what I can see.

Looks like you need a bit more motor for it! That 9.5 must really be lugging to move it with four people on board...

- Scott

Half round suggests Peterborough or a copy, certainly not a Giesler. It looks kind of like a Capella but bigger.

First boat I ever stepped in (as far as I know) was a Peterborough. Those boats are great!

Hi Paul,
I've got an early Peterboro 14' open utility hanging from the rafters that is on the "someday" list of projects. Structurally it's in good shape and just needs a thorough stripping and varnishing. I've got a sweet running '56 Johnson 15 that will likely take it's place on the transom when the boat does see water again. I'd like to get to the 13-foot Old Town utility, too... TOO MANY PROJECTS!

- Scott

I know what you mean. I've been wanting to get started on my modified "Black Arrow" project for years now to hang my 28hp on. It's got similar lines to your "Arrow" model - I wonder if they're related?

Thanks for all the help. It is cedar strip, the rest is oak and mahogany. I made the deck myself. The motor was too weak. The guy I bought it off said he had a 20 HP on it and I’m going to try it with an 18 and 33 HP next season. I’m located in Eastern Ontario Canada 20 min. from the St. Laurence River Thousand Islands aria.

Re: please help I.D. my wooden boat

Wow, for a 17 footer seems like it could handle a heck of lot more than an 18hp or 33hp. Thats the original 1963 70hp Merc on the back of mine. It'll push it top end around 40mph.
