Hi there, i'm a new poster to this forum but have viewed a lot of posts and have garnered a lot of information from this site that has helped me in my endeavours. And for that i thank you all.

I signed up because i believe you may be able to help me identify my outboard. It was my fathers, but any identifiable markings have long since been removed. I recently pulled it out of his shed and gave it a tuneup and got it running. Runs very smoky but i did give it a bit more oil as im weary about its health. It seems to run fine but im yet to test it in the water. I have no idea the make or model of this motor, nor the hp rating. I just know its old, short shaft. And has been repainted before. Ive searched online for countless hours looking for an outboard that matches the look of this one. And have found nothing. I hope you can help me. Ill attach some images.

Sorry for the wall of text!

Look on the engine for any numbers, especially if you see an embedded disc resembling a freeze plug. Did you look on transom/clamp assy and other areas?

Hey Mate, thanks for the reply. i can't honestly see a welsh plug on the motor :/ i've checked the transom/clamp assembly areas, there is no plate. there was a number right on the front of the clamp covered under about 4 layers of old paint. it said "1450" that was it. I've searched high and low for an identification number. there was a single digit "3" stamped into the Carburetor. that is it. i don't know how old this thing is. but there is nothing. i've checked everywhere.

If it's worth a mention. i replaced the water pump, the water pump housing is unlike anything i've seen, it's actually cast into the leg of the outboard. no impeller from my local boat center matched up, i had to make the closest one work. it slides straight onto the shaft, and had a small keyway. which i had to groove out of the molded plastic on the impeller.

This has got me stumped

The makeshift impeller is mostly why i'm trying to determine the motor model. it works flawlessly, pumps a good amount of water, i'm just concerned as i'd rather have a genuine in there.

If it works good, the why worry about it, at least you figured out a solution and if you need to do it again, then you know how to do it. I looked at your images, it kind of reminds me of an old Elgin or Gamefisher motor.

Its not that old. My guess is its from the 1960's. I would also guess its not USA made.

Can you show us a clearer pic of the lower unit?

It looks like a West Bend to me, just based on the shape of the hood. Might try the Other Outboards forum here, do a forum search for West Bend, or do a google search for West Bend. Can't take it much further, offhand, but thinking there might be a West Bend connection to Elgin or Scott/Scott Atwater. Interesting motor.

Maybe someone on an oldies forum would know, like AOMCI or Johns Old Mercurys (even though it's not a Merc, lot of old guys on there). I agree,it does look like a 60s vintage.

Looks like some sort of import knock-off. The lower unit and mid look almost exactly like Johnrude 18-25hp, c. 1968-1970. From belly pan on up, who knows? There were some Soviet era Russian motors that looked like they had made part-for-part copies of late 1950s Scott Atwaters, and there were some 1950s era Japanese motors that were part-for-part copies of green tank Mercs.

Can we get some better pics? Taken in daylight?

Could well be foreign as noted. The flip down cover I've seen on Sea Kings/OMCs. The inside looks kind of funky/non domestic.

Carburetor looks like an old Mikuni round slide style. Does it, perchance, say Mikuni on it, on the side of the vertical round bit?

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply.
Been really busy at work. Thank you so much for your input. Gives me a lot to research.

Ive posted more images in the suzuki forum with a topic with the same name as the boat dealer suggested it may be an old suzuki. For what its worth im not american, im from down under in the land of Oz. But this site has helped me more than once and i figured you guys could help.

The carburetor is 'TK' branded i'll look into 1960's models. So far you you guys have been a great help in identifying this beast.

My main concern is oil fuel ratio etc. And id like to be able to try and find spares! Doubtful but at least ive got a place to start thank you for all the input

The link to the other post is here it has more pictures. Id post them here but I'm just on my phone atm. I was under the impression it was a ten horse. And it runs a bit smoky. Id like to know what it really is! Driving me crazy! I looked at the west bend motors.the cowling looks about right but it doesnt have the pulldown flap
Thanks again guys

Gee, That carb does look like my old Japanese motorcycle carb, but older... When I looked at the hood, it reminded me of a Montgomery Ward OB. I haven't seen one in so long, who knows?
