I have a 1987 Four Winns Horizon 170 with a 165HP Mercruiser 470.

The trim motor stopped working this season, and I have diagnosed the issue as a failure of the motor itself. The problem is, the motor is badly corroded, and I cannot locate any identification numbers on the motor to facilitate replacement.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction in identifying the motor on this trim pump? I've enclosed pictures of the motor.

Thanks!

Re: Please help identify trim motor

Ok, I procured a replacement trim motor for my boat. However, the casing of the replacement motor is not metal. My old motor was metal and was grounded by a large metal bracket that attached to the side of the motor on which was mounted the solenoids. Any ideas how I go about grounding this motor?

Here is the replacement motor I ordered: New Tilt Trim Motor Mercury Mercruiser Various Inboard Outboard w Oildyne Pumps | eBay

Thanks!

Hook the black wire of the motor to the same bolt that has the black wire from the battery. almost positive there should be 3 wires on the old motor

Ok, we were able to use a Y cable and ground both the black wire from the new trim motor and the metal solenoid bracket. The trailer mode button now works. The up and down trim buttons do not activate the motor. Using the Mercruiser Service Manual Troubleshooting guide, the motor and pump work when manually jumping the solenoids, but it continues to not function with the buttons on the throttle.

I'm wondering if this is also a grounding issue? Any idea what to check for at this point? We're getting close!

Thanks,

Kent, sounds like a fuse or broken wire, maybe somewhere in the throttle handle itself (seen that too )...

Here's a wiring diagram. You'll need to check with a test light or multimeter and make sure you have power in the right places.
