Circled in red. One is a plastic tube, looks empty. Other is a small brass fitting. Circled in red. These are on the starboard side, just above the transom bracket. Motor is a 1978 Merc 70HP. Ser# 4875***

Re: Please help identify two fittings please.

The lower brass fitting looks like the one that connects to the fuel recirculation system. Normally there is a thin rubber hose that connects that fitting to another fitting at the top of the block. This tube carries oil that collects on the base of the crankcase to the top main bearing of the motor.

I don't know enough about your motor to comment on the other fitting.

Hmm. Ok, I'll check for another fitting up top. This seems pretty important! Crank case pressure makes it work?

Yes, crankcase pressure and the one-way brass fitting on the bottom of the crankcase. The top fitting is just a brass nipple, not a one way valve.
