Well, for months I have been trying to find why and were oil in my bilge is coming from, and I finally found it.
Can anyone please help me find out what size bolt I need for the bottom of my engine. Its at the crankcase right above the sensor and directly below the spark plug in the photo. It looks like a red bolt in this photo. Mine is completely missing, and when the engine is running, it very lightly splashing oil out the that hole. Why in the world would this bolt be gone?
The weird thing is that it doest look threaded to me near the opening, but I am guessing that the threads are maybe deeper in the hole?
Please help! I am lost as to finding what goes in that hole!
My engine is a Volvo Penta 5.7L GXi-A

Thanks!!

No. That is on the opposite side. The hole is on the starbord side. Oil on port

The dipstick is on that side on my truck with the 5.7L for example. Could a plug bolt be missing? They may allow for the dipstick to mount on either side of the block depending on the application. In that case, one side would need plugged.

Being that red bolt (AKA red rubber plug) is the oil dipstick location, This video will help guide you along, http://www.ehow.com/video_2327501_pl...es-engine.html

Personally I'd very lightly coat the plug with something such as Quicksilver Perfect Seal or the equivalent Permatex Aviation Form-A-Gasket that can be found in auto stores before installation.

Here's what you should need,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Pe...B3&vxp=mtr

If you find the plug is already installed then permatex black high temp silicone should stop the leak..Just be sure a plug is installed as you don't want the silicone running down into the oil pan/system.

Let us know, good luck.

WOW!!! That is exactly what I needed. You guys are good!
Thank you!
I'll go out and get the plug tomorrow and install it.
It such a small leak that a plug would totally be the answer.
Stay tuned......

What is the difference between the Permatex 3D and the Permatex 3H? I was getting ready to buy it and notice they have different ones.
