PLEASE HELP... I'm at a loss of what to do!

My Son's father, who lives in California, sent a 28' Cobalt boat with a 7.4 L Mercruiser V8, freshwater cooled boat to us in KY, because there is sadly not enough water for him to use the boat.

I have no knowledge in boating and would have preferred not to have this responsibility, but here I am.

My son took it out for the first time last weekend with his friends, and we experienced our first issue. One of the 5 water drain plugs had not been put in and the motor got hot.

After an extensive search, I found the plug location. Wanting to make sure all the other plugs were in and working correctly, I poured water down the water intake hoses, next to the smaller hoses going to the manifold.

I heard the water dripping from the back area of engine and found it was draining from a threaded hole on the bottom Starboard side. I couldn't see it well, but believe it was attached to the manifold.

I searched through the 1027 page manual, and while learning a lot, I did not find any reference or schematics to this area.

If anyone could please school me about this hole, if it does require a plug, and if so, its size and material (brass?), I would forever be grateful!

Any other info or advice for a new boat owner is awesomely appreciated as well.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Sounds like it's not worth fixing. I'm in KY too, so you should just let me take it off your hands, lol.
Just kidding. It is definitely a drain hole and you might look around in the boat maybe in some storage compartment and find the plugs. Are plugs blue plastic or metal?

Look on top the motor for a serial number. It will be a number, probably 0, then a Letter, then 6 more numbers Exp: 0W123456.

Take a pic of the motor and post it

I'm also in KY

Sounds to me that you're X Just thru you a curve.. you want to find all the drain fittings and be sure they are there and come winter in KY you will need to remove them so your engine doesn't freeze up..

I know this sounds crazy, but I did try to get a pic of the motor yesterday. There was a bit of what looked to be dust on the ID label and when I tried to take my finger and gently wipe it off, it erased off all the numbers.

Would this info be on the boat title? I can get that. I'll do my best to get ya any other info that may be of use.

I know this is probably of no help at all, but I did take a pic of the ID on the prop right before I tried to get the motor snap.

From my reading, the boat has 5 water drain plugs, the 2 on the starboard and 3 on port. Those plugs are all on.

This hole is located in the back on Starboard side. Kinda hard to see but I think it is directly on the block and is smaller in size and threading than the blue water plugs. (Possibly for a brass fitting?)

Id gladly take it to a Marine repair shop, but am 75 miles (and a windy road) away from their location.

Again, I am TRULY GREATFUL for any help and/or suggestions!

Being responsible for this vessel, which means so much to my Ex, and not knowing what to is is just the worst... My stomach is in knots.

The prop isn't going to help us
I'm going to go with the understanding that its a Gen 4 or 5 open cooled 454.
Do you know if its fuel injected or carberated?

The BBC would have a plug on each exhaust Manifold
One plug on each side of the block, can be matted to a fitting on the starboard side in front of the starter with the knock sensor. Might be blue plug or could be a 5/16 NPT brass plug

If its fuel injected the cool fuel module will have a plug on it on the port side.
Can also have a plug on the power steering cooler on port side
