I am changing the water pump on my 1976 Johnson 85 horse, and there is a rod that is stopping me from getting my lower assembly off, can anyone tell me how to get this off??

Don't know your motor so you may want to wait for others to jump in. What you describe is the shift rod. OMC shift rods can be disconnected in one of three places depending on the engine. Some have a small opening access panel on the side of the lower unit. Others can be disconnected by lowering the lower unit and accessing a coupler and its connecting bolt. The third, and the one I suspect you have is connected by a bolt at the base of the carbs.

Your best bet is to get a manual which you will need if you plan to do much on your own. Also check the Search function on this Web site.

Thanks man, but we figured it out. It was a bolt on the shifter linkage. Thanks for the response!!

And please use a topic that reflects your problem instead of just telling that you have a problem.
