i,ve been having problems with my merc 115 it starts up fine runs strong top end and 3/4 speed my problem is it stalls when going from neutral to forward or reverse i need to rev up in neutral then quickly pop it into gear for it to go. i brought it into the shop and they changed the accelerator pump and it still stalls. since i got the boat back it now has a very long lag in acceleration i get her in gear give it some gas and it takes 5 seconds before it goes. i brought it back to the shop now they say it must be the compression. whould that explain the stalling, because it runs good except for that. i was told by a mechanic friend that it sounds like a carb problem and that they need to be synced or cleaned what do you think---please help this is very frusterating :confused:

Your problem is to adjust the idle SPEED. A little bit faster. Don't change the idle MIXTURE settings by mistake. You need at least a manuel at your level. Your mechanics seem to be out to lunch.

Firstly, you should pull the prop,and check for monofilament wrapped up behind the trust bearing. Spider wire will actually make what appears to be a "teflon washer",(albeit, a hairy one). Stuff can get wrapped so tightly back there, that it can actually stall you out evry time you engage the prop.
This can also wipe out the propshaft seal.
If the propshaft checks-out ok, try this;

With the engine idling in neutral, take a well-insulated plier or grabber, and remove
each plug wire,and re-install. Note any difference in RPM, OR LACK OF DIFFERENCE.
If you find one that does nothing to the engine when it is removed, that cylinder is dead...This would cause the same symptom when the motor is dying in gear. Sometimes, you won't be able to notice low-end performance problems any other way. Merc used a 2-stage stator. I don't know about the 99 model, but they have 2 windings...
A low speed winding,and a high speed winding. One way of telling, is count the wires going to the switchbox from the stator,and if it has three or four,as opposed to just 2, it has this 2-stage stator.
