Welcome aboard Lowrider dude, you've almost come to the right place :) I'm going to move this over to the Mercruiser and I/O engine section. You'll get more attention over there ;)

Ayuh,....

Did you have it in Forward when you took it apart,..??

Did you have it in Forward when you put it back together,..??

I'm Guessing you'll be answering,..... Nope...

If so,... That's the Problem.....

To fix it,.. Pull the lower back off, shift Everything into Forward,...And reinstall it...
It should Work then....

Btw,.. Just a little Trick,....
Wrap a bungee strap from the Cav-plate, around the prop shaft,+ back to the other side of the Cav-plate,..
Shift the lower unit into Forward,+ the bungee will hold enough tension on the prop shaft, so it Won't slip into neutral when you're putzing trying to get it remounted...

What's up lowrider. I assume when you say related seals you mean the o-rings and gaskets related to the water pump. I'm guess'in you did NOT dis-assemble and re-seal the lower. Is it safe to say you had reverse before the drive was removed?
Common rookie mistake is messing up the shift alignment, I'm sure thats what happened here. You have to shift into foward on the boat end and then shift the drive itself into foward. Hard part is KEEPING the drive in foward gear, line up the parts and install the drive.
Check this websight- you will find it helpful--Chris

The "Cav-plate" (Bond-o is from almost out of the country and he talks funny, but don't P him O because once you translate, he's usually pretty much dead on) or AV Plate, or Anti-Ventilation Plate is that flat horizontal thing just above your propeller . . . ;)

Re: Please Help Me With My Alpha One

you can help confirm your in fwd by looking under the drive. you should see something like this..
IMG_1516.jpg

this is a pic of a 1 drive in neutral (laying on my back, drive tilted up, me laying under the drive and looking up)(an alpha 1 should look similar). if it were in fwd. the coupler would be facing straight fwd. this gets the upper shift shaft in fwd. then go to the lower and find a socket that'll fit the shift shaft. it turns smoothly from side to side. one side is rev. the other is fwd. in the middle is neutral. to find which way is which. when the prop will not spin ccw. that will be fwd. the prop will ratchet cw in this condition. visa verse. when the prop is locked cw, that will be rev. the prop will ratchet ccw in this condition. half way in between rev. and fwd. is neutral. the prop will free wheel either direction, no ratchet either way.
so, on the lower find fwd. prop locks ccw. bungee cord it like bondo suggest. that suggestion works good. put the helm in fwd. confirm by looking at the coupler seeing that it's facing fwd. then mate the two...
if you don't have a service manual. you need to go over here and get one..

you'll have to pic yer poison as ya didn't provide a serial number or a year... confirm proper sm by serial number.

In ziggies picture, the drive is in the neutral position. Both of those shoes have to face forward when you take it apart and put it back together. If not, you have probably bent one of them and they will not go back together correctly.

One other note. You need to turn off your Caps Lock. That is why every word in your post is capitalized. The forum software prevent all letters from being caps.

If you haven't solved it yet after trying the above tips - you may have forgotten the washer on top of the shift shaft. If that washer is forgotten, the "shoe" drops below the "socket" and the unit doesn't shift. Here's a pic:
