so heres the deal, a while back i bought a 1978 115 evinrude V4, it runs but it has some "issues" it has good compression on all 4 cylinders, and a good hot spark on all 4 cylinders but...........

from a dead cold start, it will not crank on its own, i have to squirt a little gasoline in the front of the carbs to get it to crank, you can choke it, raise the fast idle lever, and cuss at it, it just will not crank on its own no matter what you do, unless you shoot a little gas in the carb throats

once i get it cranked and running on the ears, i cant bring the idle lever on the control box down all the way, or it will die, then will not crank back up on its own (see above)

i cant idle it up any, because the idle screw on the throttle/shift cam, is screwed all the way down, and i cant adjust the carbs, because they have no fuel air mix screws (call me a liar but ive looked the carbs over a 1000 times and cant find one)

i tried 2 different brand new attwood primer bulbs from walmart, neither would push gas into my carbs from my tank, and yes i had the fuel flow in the proper direction, tried my neighbors line and tank (trying to eliminate variables) and it did no different

the bulb never quite gets solid like its suppoesed to, always has a slight sponge to it, like theres air trapped somewhere

i did manage to take it out on the water once, with a 13 pitch prop (needs to be reproped) on a 17 foot glastron with 3 full grown adults, it reached 33mph and ran fine at WOT, but wont crank on its own or idle to save your life

someone help me, id like to go fishing

How your primer bulb is acting, I would say the fuel pump might need to be addressed.

It has low speed idle screws if I'm not mistaken, but the high speed jets are fixed.

Rebuilding the carbs and fuel pump would be a good place to start if this is a "new to you" motor, along with a proper linc and sync.

A factory manual will go a long ways here.

Good luck,
Hunter

Yes, the carbs may be gunked up. At low rpms, the carb delivers a very small amount of fuel through very tiny passages. If they're gummed up..no fuel!

Also, does you motor have an electric primer? Are you pushing in the key to prime?

I would say get your two carb kits and clean out the carbs throughly.

It doesn't use a primer, it uses a standard choke.

When choked it spray quite a bit of fuel into the carb bodys. - If not, I would suspect your fuel pump needs repair.

They are very simple carbs, and a very simple fuel pump. Repair kits both are quite cheap.

you can find instruction here on the forum to rebuild both.

When I had my 78, I had not yet discovered this forum, and it was my first time working on an outboard. And I did it just by trying.

Also- to choke, push your key in.

You can take off your hood, and push in key, you'll be able to hear the 'butterflys' closing

probably should have mentioned that it has the old style evinrude/johnson choke, the toggle switch under the key, it did sit for quite a while, but normally i drain my carbs before storing my boats, ill definately try something to clean the carbs, also, where would the low speed jet screws be? from what ive seen on the carbs, all are just fixed screws.

yeah i just took one of my old 115 carbs from a parts motor and it doesnt have any adjustment screws.

what kind of carb cleaner would you recommended?
and would you recommend pulling it apart and cleaning or running something thru the fuel? such as putting a cleaner and a gallon of gasoline in a smaller tank and running it thru?

Re: please help me with my evinrude 115

here are the carb instructions, there is a link at the bottom, for the 115 carbs. i just did a set of 115 they were easy. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

also on the aftermarket bulbs, most do not get hard, unless you point the arrow to the sky, they have a sorry check valve in them.

Re: please help me with my evinrude 115

well, its a little better, but not much

today i decarbed the motor, but everytime i would shut it off for any length of time it would not crank under its own power, once it cranked it ran pretty as could be, but it just would not fire up on its own, i would still have to shoot gas in the carb throats to get it to crank

the fuel pump is pumping, yesterday when i had the carbs off, i spun the motor over, and fuel is pumping thru both lines to the carbs

the gas is getting into the carbs as it will run on its own for however long with out re pumping the bulb or spraying more gas into it

why wont this stubborn son of a gun crank up on its own?

Did you take the carbs apart and clean every little hole including all of the low and high speed jets? Reinstall with new kits? Blow all the holes with compressed air. I'd be willing to bet your low speed jets are clogged. Next thing to do is make sure all of your fuel hoses are in good shape. Any crack or loose connection will make it suck air. Check EVERY fuel hose and connection from the tank to the carbs. If the hoses are from '78, it's time to replace. Lastly, Double check spark on all 4.

Re: once before

Re: once before

my evinrude had the same problem and after i took apart the carb the float was stuck open due to the inlet needle jammed open.

Re: please help me with my evinrude 115

ok, so heres a sit-rep as of today

yesterday, i decarbed the motor with seafoam

today, i cleaned the carbs, idle jets, main jets and all passages with carb cleaner and blew them out with the compressor

it was able to crank on its own, but i accredit that to the carb cleaner

while it was running i sprayed a little carb cleaner in the bottom 2 carb throats, it died down as if it were flooding

i sprayed it in the top two carb throats and it powered up! it would run on its own, but if i sprayed carb cleaner in the top two throats it would raise the rpms way up

what does this mean?
my fuel pump isnt strong enough to pump to the top bowl?
my float isnt set right on the top carb?
do i have a stuck reed valve?

help me out fellas, weve almost got her licked!

Re: please help me with my evinrude 115

First of all, I would use pre-mix fuel ONLY to spray in the carbs. Carb cleaner doesn't have oil in it to lubricate the cylinders. Don't run the motor long if you suspect there isn't fuel going into the cylinder. Premix fuel is the only way to lubricate the cylinders. If you can spray premix in the top cylinder and it picks up then it is still a fuel problem. If the carbs are clean, you should be able to pump enough fuel into the bowls(with the bulb) to keep it running for a bit. If it starts to sneeze and pumping the bulb cures that, I would rebuild the fuel pump. Otherwise it should idle at 1100 Rpm's out on the muffs. 650Rpms in the water.
