Hello, I am new to boating but have played with cars and bikes for years
Sorry for my spelling

Bought a 1992 Forester Diva OMC Cobra GM 4.3L V6
Took the boat out on water first time all was ok exept RPM guage was all over the place(mostly higher than the actual rpm but Did Not drop all the way down to 0), and couple other erelevant things, than finaly when i took the boat out second time on water the RPM guage got stuck at highest point.

The third time i had the boat out already with a stuck RPM guage, after riding around for couple hours almost at full throttle it died on me so i started checking things.......

2AMP Acc Fuse blew(replaced), Battery OK, No spark at spark plugs, took the wire that goes from coil to center of distributor cap placed it near ground crank the engine no spark, 12v going to the +side on coil and the neg side of coil also had a + ~4V  tried a new coil still no spark

Luckly there was a boater with a bigger boat passing by that gave me a tow back to marina. Thanks again!

There is a very very small spark if i place the the cap end of wire from coil really close to ground and cranck the engine, and one more thing im not shore if this is relevant but i did have a 25A constant load on the battery when the boat was running and because of that there was a 50A fuse that would trip while boating so the boat ran a number of times just of the alternator til i had time to stop and reset the fuse

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you for your interest

Re: Please help!!! 1992 OMC Cobra 4.3L NO SPARK:confused:

On my merc, I ran into a no spark problem and was advised to remove the grey wire from the -side of the distributor and see if I had spark. Well, it fired right up because the grey wire was the tach wire and the tach was shorting out. Never would have thunk it! Anyway, it looks like youve already run a wire from the battery straight to the coil so the grey wire would be my next try

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I disconected the shift assist module and it fired up :)
that was the easiest way to disconest the gray wire that goes from the tech.
Also one more question what dose the shift assist actually for (what dose it do?)

Also one more question what dose the shift assist actually for (what dose it do?)

The shift assist is there to make it easy to shift out of gear. The cobra uses a dog-clutch system the sort of locks the gears together, making it very difficult to shift to neutral when the propeller is under load. The shift assist briefly interrupts the spark, making the engine stumble and lose power. When the engine loses power (only for a few seconds) it's easier to shift out of gear.

If your Electronic Shift Assist (ESA) is disconnected you may find it very hard to shift out of forward or reverse; this is a safety issue when you're trying to stop your boat.

(No spark. Disconect shift assist it fires up)

Sorry about the last question, there is plenty of info about what shift assist doues i should of did more searching.Thank you DBreskin!

I do realize the danger of having the shift assist disconected but the boat is out of the water and i do not plan to take it out till i get this fixed.

So i did som more checking and this is what i got:
With ignition on and the shift assist conected i took a volt meter and conected + side to the battery and with the - started testing the wires that go to and from the shift assist:
Black 12v
Gray from RMP guage 1.2V
Gray/black to coil 7.5V
White 0V goes to the switch that inguages the gear (im assuming)
Purple 1.2V that goes to the shift intorrupt switch (im assuming)
With that said my question is:

Are dose voltages normal?
(if not could it be the shift assist moduale and what could of caused this to happened? Is it related to my rpm guage getting stuck at highest point?)
Where is the shift intorrupt switch located?
And last but not least What do i do next?
