We have been doing some work on my boat the past few weeks. NEW COIL, PLUG WIRES, COIL WIRE, POINTS, BATTERY, CONDENSOR, FUEL FILTER, PLUGS. We finally got it started and it has started right up. Today after fixing the fuel tank out line, and changin the oil and oil filter it started up no problem.,... Ran great at 75% throttle and down .... was good until I got to where it should be running at idle and then it died. We have not been able to start it since. Took out all plugs and they were wet. Cranked it over to blow out excess (flooding) gas and re-installed them (after checking spark on each plug and wire// all were getting good spark) Checked fuel line and all filters. By-passed all filters with a stright line from tank to fuel pump. Checked fuel pump by undoing gas inlet from carb and it gets great gas flow... only thing is, is like I said it just won't fire off and start. Battery was hooked to cranking 12 v charger to ensure it wasn't it either. What couold be the issue(s)? We are lost please help. Thank you in advance.
NOTE: Plug gaps and Points gap has been set to manufacturer measurements. Trying to get my boat in the water for the 4th of July. Any and all help is appreciated.

Re: Please Help. Starting Issue

If your new plugs got soaked in fuel they may take a while to dry out..... Sounds like you may have some carb issue....dumping too much fuel and flooding out.... just my .02

Re: Please Help. Starting Issue

I took out plugs. Cleaned them off and sprayed them out with carb cleaner (then let them dry out) shined em up. Put em back in. Also took out the jets and cleaned them. I got some sort of a popping sound like a backfire and that was it. It still just turns over but won't start. Dumb question, but am I narrowed down to the CARB now... or at least on a best educated guess? I have called OMC Cobra repair shops and they won';t tell me anything over the phone as far as possibilities...all they want is $$$$ when I bring it in.

Re: Please Help. Starting Issue

I had a similar problem. I have a OMC 3.0 I/O. the floats on my carb were stuck open. After I would run the engine and turn it off fuel would leak out of the front of the carb. If I was on the water and turned it off I would have a problem starting. what I did was move the throttle to full open like you would do with a flooded car. when it fired I would throttle back to idle and it would run fine until i turned it off again. If I didn't move it to full throttle it wouldn't start. Once I had the carb rebuilt that problem went away.

I am getting my carb rebuilt today so I really really hope it works. Did yours not want to start pretty much at all...? I have had the throttle all the way open and have had the same issue.

Mine was just hard to start. Cold it would start just bumbing the throttle a couple of time then back to center. After it was warm it took some effort. We took the boat out twice before I had the carb done. The first time it was just a little hard to start. The second time it did not want to start at all. Do you smell a strong gas smell when running?

Re: Please Help. Starting Issue

I don't notice a strong gas smell, but then again my sense of smell isn't really that good anyways. We did notice that it flooded easily. NOTE: We just took the carb off and there was watered down gas in the bowl. New gas is in the tank, but the bowl was full of bad gas. Also, there was a little bit of rusted looking water in the intake just underneath the carb. The intake looked bone dry besides the rusted water spot. in yours (or anyones) opinion, am I going to have to take off the intake and have it cleaned (or get a new one)?

i don't know if your 3.0 is similar to my 2.3, but my automatic choke was sticking last year and running terribly. i simply tied it so it was closed and it runs fine now after warming up.

If you tied the choke closed it would not run.....

Re: Please Help. Starting Issue on 88 100 hp Mercury outboard.

My 88 100 HP Mercury outboard fowls the spark plugs after running for a while and turning off the engine to catch a swim. Upon trying to restart the engine, it fowls the plugs and I have to remove, clean and reinstall the plugs to get it to start again. This happens over and over and need help to repair. Please advise!
