Hey folks, new to the forum, so thx in advance for any and all help. I just restored a 1983 Superglass 14 ft fiberglass boat. Found and bought a 25hp 1954 Evinrude big twin for it. Wrapped up everything on the boat,, took it to the marina here in buffalo to find that even in full throttle, the boat won't go more than 5mph. Motor starts fine and had the right oil gas mixture in it. The gas tank seems to be holding air pressure since the cap is harder than hell to take off after running motor. I kinda just slapped the throttle cable on the motor without too much knowledge of outboard motors. The motor stays running the whole time it's on. It almost feels like the the throttle and throttle cable aren't set right or something. Is that possible? This is my first boat and first time trying to tune one in, so keep that in mind lol. I've seen videos on YouTube of 1954 Evinrude 25 hp big twins hauling arse, but mine seems like there's a massive blockage for anything past 5-7mph. Thx for any ideas. I'm going to be taking it out hopefully this Friday. After all the work and money I dumped in this vessel already, I really just want to have it running right

Typical story heard every day by outboard mechanics. 90% chance it is running on one cylinder. Have you had the flywheel off and serviced the points & condensers? How bout the coils? If they haven't already been replaced, they need to be. That goes for all OMC motors of that era. Get new ones right here at iboats.

But before you do that, be sure to check the compression. You don't want to pour money into a dead horse.

Cool, thx. I'll look into that, all though it'll be a first time tearing into an outboard motor, I'm sure I'll figure it out. Someone else mentioned testing the spark, and making sure it can jump at lest a quarter inch?

Another thing I noticed, is that the throttle control is not right, as in, at about half way between forward and back, the motor is at a slow idle. If I pull it any further back, it cuts out the motor. If I push the throttle control all the way forward, it only gets to about 5mph tops. It's almost like the throttle on the motor and the throttle by the steering wheel aren't set right or something.

First things first. Disconnect the remote control and see if you can get full throttle at the motor. If you can, then see what's wrong with the control. Sounds like the inner wire in the cable has broken at some time and somebody patched it.

Short story is always fit the control to the motor, never fit the motor to the control.

After taking the cowl and pull start off the motor, I found the problem. The forward /reverse handle does not fall all the way into either groove in the rocker arm, which in turn is preventing the throttle to be opened up all the way. The fin underneath flywheel is hitting the rocker arm for the forward /reverse shifter. Now I have to figure out why the pin on the shifter knob isn't falling all the way into grooves on rocker arm. Any ideas? By the way, thx for all the advice so far.
