i bought a 1989 skeeter SD 80 FS from a co worker few days ago. the boat is in pristine shape. it has a mecury 80 horse oil injected motor. they had not run the boat in a year and it still had some gas in it. they were told when they bought it that even though it was oil injected to still put some oil in with the gas.

we hooked the ears up yesterday and the motor purred. so instead of taking out the old fuel, this morning i topped it off and i added a little oil with the gas because i am not sure if indeed the oil injection is working. it should be, but the guy had never checked it and there was about 1/3 full when i bought it.
so to make a long story short, we hit the lake this morning and it took a few turns to get it going, but we got it warmed up and we went up the lake. i mean the motor was smooth-no knocks, misses or anything, it ran like it was new. we pulled up and as i threw it in netrul it stalled. so we fished a little and then decided to move. i started it and ran about 1/4 mile up the lake. we stopped again for a while and then when i went to start it again she wouldnt start. she would crank but not fire. so for the next hour we tried but nothing.
we ended up getting pulled in.
so my question is, when i got home i pulled the plugs thinking i fouled them, but they were not in too bad of shape. any ideas what might be going on? the couple i bought the boat from said they had no problems in the 8 years they owned it.
seems like it ran to good for something major to be going on. i am going to drain the gas and change the plugs and hope for the best. just wondered if there might be something i am missing.
also, should i continue to put oil in the gas or rely on the resevoir to inject it?
thanks

Re: please help with new boat

I would start by thinking it's probably in the fuel system (it's never good for boats to sit for extrended periods of time with the fuel still in the carbs / lines etc).

You'll probably end up needing a carb cleaning, but first you should check to make sure you're getting good spark at the plugs.
