I have a 1969 SeaRay with an inline 6cyl motor. The starter silenoid has two small terminals, one labeled "S" with a yellow wire run to the gear shifter neutral switch then goes to the "ST" (Starter) on the back of the ignition switch, and one labeled "R" with a white wire which is not connected to anything, and one big terminal, which is connected to the battery. The white wire belongs somewhere and I can't figure out where. I have recently replaced the ignition switch that has "ST" (Starter), "ACC" (Accessory), "IG" (Ignition), and "BAT" (Battery) on the back. The gauges are all connected to the "IG" and the battery to "BAT" and the fuse box to the "ACC". I get the problem of trying to start the motor and everything turnsover but will not stay running. It is like it wants to try to constantly start. Is my setup incorrect with the wires and where should the white wire go. (This wiring is very simple for the experience and unfortunately this is my first boat. I am throughly stumpped...?
Thanks for your help in advance

Re: Please Help with Starting Problems....

Greeting from Uvalde. With regards to the white wire...white is not usually used in Marine wiring. So...I'm not sure where it would go. As for the other wiring to the switch. It must be a 4 post switch? One for Bat, one for Ig (ignition), one for acc, one for start? If so, the guages should be wired to ignition, the starter switch (usually yellow with red) to the start terminal on the switch, the purple to the ignition terminal.). I don't use the accessory terminal. I have a four post switch to, but they are usually for autos...boats usually use a 3 way. Someone else put this 4 way on here. Go the the following website and it will give you a Marine Wire Color Code chart you can print:
http://wwww.cncphotoalbum.com/doityourself/wiring/wiring.htm

You can call Scott at Trail West Trading Post - in Del Rio - 775-3910. He is the mechanic there. He seems pretty knowlegeable about boats. I've talked to him before about this one of mine.

Cal

Ok I checked out the wiring chart and I am still confused. It does have the white wire which looks to be original on there. Do you know what the "R" and "S" on the starter silenoid stand for?

Smokey,

The "R" stands for "run".

The "S" stands for "start".

Thus, the "R" terminal on the starter should go to the "Ign" terminal on the switch.

The "S" wire goes to the "ST" on the switch.

The reason the URL doesn't work is because there are 4 "W"'s instead of 3. I have made that mistake before and thought it looked familiar lol
